West Seattle’s Husky Deli makes final 8 in TV contest for ‘Best Ice Cream’

11:07 PM: Just heard from Jack Miller @ Husky Deli – whose famous ice cream has made it to the final 8 in a TV contest for “Best Ice Cream” in Western Washington. If you see this before midmorning tomorrow, they’re asking for your vote – it’s apparently a fast-moving contest and votes between now and 9 am (Wednesday) will determine the Final Four. Here’s the direct link; please note it’s a “Facebook app” contest (if anybody knows another way to vote, let us know!).

12:58 AM: Thanks to JanS for finding (as she notes in comments) the Facebookless way to vote! You still have to “create an account” but it’s simple (we tested it). Go here – before 9 am!

Thanks, Jan – while that still requires “creating an account,” it’s better than using the “Facebook app,” which immediately announces it wants access to all your info, and therefore turns some off.

Isn’t there something a bit flawed in a “rounds” based competition where it’s unlikely that many people would have sampled both an Ellensburgh based ice cream and a Seattle based one (for example from the first round?) (Sure, there are folks that have sampled both, but that would be the exception, not the rule.) The results are inconsequential I’m guessing, but still not sure what this style of voting is supposed to be accomplishing.

How can I pick just one? Winegars is delicious! Husky is delicious! Whidby is delicious! I’m sure the ones I haven’t tried are also…delicious!

Km: Are you really surprised? The mainstream media’s obsession with these BEST contests are rarely about the true objective quality of the given subject and are more a trumped up popularity contest designed to increase viewership/readership. Husky and Full Tilt are great local outlets for ice cream. But in a broader view there are I feel like there are much more interesting things happening with ice cream beyond the borders of our fair city that make contests like this look a bit silly. I’d love to see our local favorites push the envelope a bit more.
