West Seattle Crime Watch: ‘Yard intruder’ reported

Quiet day in West Seattle Crime Watch – only one reader report today, and checking the police-response map, we note the incident markers are relatively sparse. Today’s lone reader report involves a suspected casing/prowling incident this morning in what we might describe as Upper Alki – read on:

We live at the intersection of 58th and Hillcrest/Orleans and our home is currently under construction. This morning at approximately 6:30, I went out of our bottom side door to let our cat in and noticed our side gate was open. A stranger came around the back corner of our house and when loudly asked what he was doing on our property, he said he was looking for the path and staircase that led down to Beach Drive and he thought this was the location. I immediately started yelling for him to get out of our yard and off our property. I repeatedly told him this was private property and to leave immediately. As the man was exiting my backyard, I looked up the side stairs of our house and there was another person standing at top of stairs. The man that was in the yard walked through the gate and up the side stairs to the other person. They both left our property and continued north down 58th.

Description of yard intruder: Approximately 5′ 7″ with white nylon Adidas or other brand sporty sweatshirt jacket, shaved bald head, black pants or jeans, tennis shoes

Description of person at top of stairs: Not sure if male or female but medium height and build, shoulder-length dark hair

The resident did call police, as they advise you do in any case of something/someone suspicious.

interesting. This evening there was something going on down the street from me (across the street from the new apts. behind Admiral Safeway). Five police cars at first…and then a fire engine. Have no idea what was up, and there was nothing on the realtime 911 posts

No texts to us, and I went through Tweets by Beat, too, which usually include an incident classification within an hour or so of something being resolved. My declaration of a quieter day than usual doesn’t mean police haven’t been busy – just that there hasn’t been a deluge of major-crime reports …

wow. Great crime tale. Sounds as though he was looking to find the path to Brach drive….

Was the intruder white, black, asian, latino? Age approximation?

It is worth noting that someone knocked loudly and repeatedly on one of our doors the night before this happened. I jumped out of bed and checked all of the doors to our house and didn’t see anything. Since our house is under construction, it takes a while to check every door.

The gate my wife described is a very private gate. There is no way in hell someone would confuse this as any type of access to the beach, which is at least blocks away. He had to reach up and over to unlock this gate. The prowler was in our private back yard casing our place at 6:30 in the morning. I had left at 5:20am and was not there. The guy appeared from around the corner, 10′ away from my wife. His lookout guy was at the top corner of our lot. Our 4 year old daughter was upstairs sleeping. I am proud of my wife reacting this way to the prowler/burglar. His story was obviously complete BS.

It was a very nerve-racking day yesterday and I suggested that my wife notify WSB so the neighborhood could receive an alert.

Terry/Troll, your comment is misinformed and insensitive. Maybe if you would have understood the circumstances surrounding this incident, you would realize that my wife could have been in serious danger. She felt as though she was a goner, and she was really shaken up yesterday.

It really is sad that we need to be so worried about things like this nowadays. Maybe the guy was looking for the way to Beach Dr. but you never know. If you walk through a gate into someones yard, you’ll probably either get shot or find the police on your tail. It is getting more and more difficult to treat people as though they are NOT up to no good.

I lived in Boston an Philly and was robbed several times. I learned that robbers hate to waist time and they won’t jump over a fence. Add locks to all your gates and windows. Also a good door lock from a locksmith not home depo. Time is a burgler killer. Glad you scared them away.

He kinda sounds like one of the people living under the Fairmont ravine bridge. The shaved head, the black clothing. Is he a about twenty something?

Coleman you are right. Several years ago my wife awoke on the couch and was coming to bed and saw/ watched an older guy wandering around our fenced yard late @ night checking out the house then exited the front gate. Since then both gates are padlocked after dark and no problems since

This was a very frightening situation. These two men were casing my house out and possibly trying doors while my 4-year-old daughter slept upstairs. I was in a dangerous situation; stuck between two strangers on my own property outside. One was about 8 feet away on one side of me and the other was up a few stairs, about 10 feet away to the other side. When I whistled for our cat, the guy at the back of the house must have thought his lookout person was warning him. Our backyard is private, gated and it is obvious there is no path access. These guys were without a doubt, looking to break into our home.

The man that walked from around the back of the house was caucasian with a shaved head. He actually looked well groomed. The person at the top of the stairs could have been of Latin decent or Native American decent. I couldn’t see the face through the person’s dark hair.

And Coleman, you are absolutely correct about locks on the gate. Part of our current construction project includes a gated courtyard with heavy locks on all entries to our property. We have lived here 10 years and never had a problem but we have planned to do this for many years. I now can’t wait until it is done. Until then, I am comforted by the fact that we have video surveillance and a comprehensive security system.

So glad that they left your property, and that you are OK. I can only imagine the fear that you felt, especially with a young child upstairs asleep.

  • DSC March 28, 2013 (12:39 pm)

Wow that is really scary. Glad they left

We added locks to our back and side gates last year in Gatewood after finding an obvious caser in our backyard at 530 pm. It has provided peace of mind, but beyond that if we see someone unfamiliar in those spaces now it’s black and white that they are up to no good.

Sorry, comment time is over.
