The seniors playing basketball for West Seattle High School were honored last night during a busy night at the WSHS gym, with Eastside Catholic visiting. Though both varsity teams lost, it was an occasion to pay tribute to the hard work this season and the achievements of the departing players – we have the seniors’ photos, plus game recaps, ahead:

First, the games (summaries and all photos by WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand):

GIRLS’ GAME: The Wildcat girls went to a very up close press early on, but Eastside Catholic was always a step faster, which led to a 63-37 win. From the start, Eastside’s Micheala O’Rourke had a big game. She opened up going four for four at the free throw line as she went on to score 18 points overall. West Seattle’s Haily Hage led the Wildcats with 10 points. Right behind her was senior Annie Patnode (8 points), who got a couple of baskets on the fast break.

BOYS’ GAME: West Seattle’s superior rebounding skills and Eastside Catholic’s hit-and-miss outside shooting kept the game close for the first half, but the Crusaders managed to find their bearings after halftime and won 70-51. The big turnaround was due largely to Eastside junior Austin Soukup, who went on an unanswered 13-point run in the third. While West Seattle fought back through that quarter, they found themselves behind by double digits as the game went on. Soukup finished up with 31 points in all. West Seattle’s leading scorer was Troy Lingle with 14.
