West Seattle snow: Afternoon updates; driving difficulties

(KEY LINKS: Metro buses on snow routes; Sound Transit too … Traffic cams here … Many steep hills now closed … Winter Weather Advisory in effect, roads might ice tonight …)

12:20 PM: It’s gotten much snowier in the past hour; if you watch the WSB Twitter feed, you’ve seen our photos – we’ll add some here momentarily and those you have been sending. We were headed to the Farmers’ Market when things got serious – check what we found there:

(added) Also – Dave Montoure of West 5, selling corn chowder! Hot soup for an ice-cold day:

(added) Christopher Boffoli shot this panorama shortly after the snow started – you can click and pan around in the scene:

As of right now, there’s a line south of The Junction: North of the line, snow on the ground, on the road, falling. Here in the south, we have pinpoint “corn snow” right now and it’s only JUST begun to stick on the road – we passed the highest point in Seattle about five minutes ago and at that time, nothing even on the grass, but a mile south, the first stuck bus we’d seen today. Metro has just announced it’s on snow routes (find them here). Plows are out too – in the background of this cameraphone shot, we saw one heading back onto the high bridge from 35th/Avalon:

More to come – let us know what’s happening where you are.

12:43 PM: The photo over this line is an overview from near the Luna Park business district, courtesy of Charles. Thanks to everyone who’s sending photos! We’ve found in past storms (if you weren’t with WSB then) they provide a vital view of what’s happening all around the peninsula.

1:15 PM: Just back from a trip through Arbor Heights. Side streets covered but passable if you drive slow. 35th SW is OK, same advice, but certainly snowy/slushy (photo above is looking north toward Roxbury from 35th after 1 pm). We’re hearing that most steep hills, particularly in north WS where it’s been snowing heavier longer, are impassable – Admiral has spinouts and a stuck bus. A caller (thanks – 206-293-6302) says the bridge is having trouble too. See the latest views on our Traffic cams page. Back to the neighborhoods: From Tony in High Point –

Also just got word from Neil that SW Genesee is closed between Avalon and Delridge – very steep hill so no surprise. Pic:

Thanks for the road updates – the official sources don’t have this level of detail so your reports are key. Meantime, the West Seattle YMCA has just tweeted:

Change in plans. All basketball games 2 pm on are cancelled, pix, too. Fauntleroy Y will close @ 2 pm, West Seattle Y will close @ 5 pm.

1:50 PM: Got a report that 35th is closed at Alaska. That’s where we saw the stuck bus at noontime, photo atop this report. Meantime, some north areas (Admiral/Alki) tallying snow around 3 inches already. Thanks to Robert for this beach shot from around 1 pm:

And there’s sledding too! We’ve heard of several spots. From our WSBeat correspondent Megan Sheppard, here’s Belvidere Viewpoint Park:

It is suddenly down to a light flurry here in Upper Fauntleroy (now 1:58).

3:01 PM: 36th and 37th around Providence Mount St. Vincent were reported in bad shape – thanks to Karen and Deb from West Seattle Be Prepared for conveying that. We just came back from one more run through Arbor Heights – 35th OK, has been either sanded or well=traveled, and side streets still pretty snowy. Also took Barton down to Fauntleroy – bare and wet, same for Fauntleroy Way along Lincoln Park, though we saw some snowperson-building activity on the park grass. Here’s one on Alki – photo by Ian Coldwell, snowman by Andy Burgess, both Alki residents:

From North Admiral, Erik Walum shares the scene at Hamilton Viewpoint:

Also in Admiral, Ted measured – four-inch accumulation:

Back to Lincoln Park – tranquil scene from Trileigh Tucker:

And Alki Lighthouse is lovely in the snow – thanks to Russ Walker for this photo from his Flickr gallery:

So is DK’s backyard in Highland Park:

We’ll be going out after 4 to check out the road conditions before sunset. The Weather Service has renewed its advisory and that includes concern about roads icing over.

4:07 PM: Skylark Café and JaK’s Grill have both mentioned on Facebook that they’ll be closed tonight due to complications of the weather. By 6 pm, we’ll switch over to an ongoing evening weather update, though we’re also hoping to get some coverage of other weekend news in before then. Meantime, more photos! First, Ginny Woo says this is son Gus (10 months)’s first snow – he was out as she and his big sis Ava, 7, built a “snowlady”:

The Pals family sent their snow-giant photo – with, from left, Mommy, Ira, and Jurgen:

We even got a snowman photo from The Admiral District’s Brent Amaker:

And over at Madison Middle School, Steve shows us, they’ve been sledding:

Tomorrow was already an off-day for students, remember, since it’s the official King Day holiday. For now – more snow falling … A big line of dark clouds just advanced from the west (not long after a sunbreak in the same spot – wild weather!).

6:12 PM: Took that trip around the peninsula, traveling California and 35th among other roads. Didn’t encounter any closures – but snow was falling again. Admiral is still way snowier than Morgan Junction and many points south. Meantime, Metro says it’ll be on snow routing again tomorrow, and also reminds you that its Monday schedule is “reduced weekday” for the MLK Day holiday. We will start ongoing evening coverage in a while – after a few other things that have been in queue.

Bridge is slippery! Just sneaked through from green lake at noon. looked as if it was starting to pile up with cars

  • Ajax January 15, 2012 (12:24 pm)

I’m between Admiral and Alaska Junctions and it’s been snowing fairly hard for about an hour and it’s sticking to everything. About a 1/2 inch on my deck railing.

  • HelperMonkey January 15, 2012 (12:27 pm)

snow just started falling in earnest in Arbor Heights. About time, too. I was beginning to feel left out. :)

  • Kip January 15, 2012 (12:27 pm)

Zero snow in Arbor Heights / Ocean View neighborhoods. Was so looking forward to it-

  • Clary January 15, 2012 (12:28 pm)

On 35th, just south of the bridge, there were four cars crashed (which appeared to be from two separate accidents). Everyone looked okay (outside there cars on cell phones). But if you can avoid going down that hill, that’d be good.

  • Kip January 15, 2012 (12:28 pm)

HelperMonkey. Looks like your right! :)

  • Rockergirl5678 January 15, 2012 (12:28 pm)

Passed several wrecks twenty minutes ago on 35th by Mt. St. Vincent hill – cars sliding on hill hit tree an each other too. Should be an interesting trip back after the gym.

  • Austin January 15, 2012 (12:29 pm)

The snow made for a great walk back from the farmer’s market. I looked like a snowman when I got home. Everyone stay safe!

  • Steph January 15, 2012 (12:31 pm)

Finally starting to stick here at the highest point in W. Seattle (36th and Othello).

  • rw January 15, 2012 (12:33 pm)

I just got home from All Star Fitness. What a difference 90 minutes made! A bus is stalled on uphill Admiral and cars (most) are being super cautious heading both uphill and downhill. Even on the flat portion of Admiral I detected icing, and on side streets. Looks like we will be walking to/from the store for evening groceries. Enjoy the snow if you can.

  • David January 15, 2012 (12:43 pm)

Bus blocking uphill side of admiral hill eastbound. We barely squeezed by 10 mins ago.

  • Diane January 15, 2012 (12:45 pm)

snowing heavy and sideways for an hour in south Admiral; sticking to everything; very glad I parked my car up on a flat street last night; I live on a hill that becomes bumper cars in snow/ice
    ~
I guessed buses were on snow route; haven’t seen 51 since snow started, so if I want to go anywhere will have to get out the snow boots & hike it
    ~
gotta admit it’s very pretty; I could enjoy a whole lot more if I had 4wheel so I could still go wherever; when it snows in Seattle, I am like many who don’t have cars that can deal with snow/ice driving; hoping the predictions that this is short-lived are correct; I’ve already received emails of a couple events cancelled due to snow

  • Halyn January 15, 2012 (12:45 pm)

Tiny little flakes falling fast and furious in the Roxhill/Westwood area. A little less than an inch of accumulation on the ground. What a surprise…half an hour ago I looked out the window and thought “Well, so much for the snow storm..”

  • babs January 15, 2012 (12:47 pm)

Has been snowing steadily in Seaview since around 11:00. A little worried, husband will be driving home from Sea-tac this afternoon. Any word on the conditions of I-5 and the bridge?

  • Trileigh January 15, 2012 (12:47 pm)

Lovely big flakes here by Lincoln Park! Ground is just about covered and all the little branches are outlined in white. Winter wonderland!

  • SSF January 15, 2012 (12:48 pm)

We came up the hill on 35th an hour ago and it was slippery. Cars with only 2wd were struggling to go up we had 4wd and was no problem. Drive safely.

  • Rhonda January 15, 2012 (12:54 pm)

It is a winter wonderland down here on beach. Cars driving fast like it is the middle of summer. Glad my car is in the garage.

  • Click! January 15, 2012 (12:55 pm)

According to the weather radar we’re right in the middle of a band of precipitation stretching from Vashon to Redmond that is just sitting on us not really going anywhere!

  • snowy January 15, 2012 (1:00 pm)

wow it is really snowing now in highland park. we just got back an hour ago from a mile and a half walk up to 35th and henderson where there was no snow at all, just wet streets. seemed like a non-event. now that we are back up on the hill of our neighborhood in highland park it is snowing steadily and everything is white. i wonder if there is snow now by 35th and henderson?

  • Chris January 15, 2012 (1:01 pm)

Everyone who is uncomfortable driving in the snow or does not have a proper vehicles or tires, please get off the roads and protect the safety of us all!

  • really January 15, 2012 (1:07 pm)

Live in highpoint…slide all the way down 35th by alaska. Have to p/u husband from work then trek to cd and southend to pick up kids. A little afraid of how I’ll get back home. Thanks everyone for the updates…I’ll be using them to get back home.

  • Twobottles January 15, 2012 (1:07 pm)

Heavy snow in North Admiral for the last couple of hours. Streets and grass completely covered

  • Amanda January 15, 2012 (1:08 pm)

Photos are so appreciated. I am in Netherlands on business and due back to SeaTac Monday night! So glad to see shots of the neighborhood, but was hoping all will be gone by the time I get back!!

  • coffee January 15, 2012 (1:16 pm)

Looking out at the on-ramp to the bridge on Delridge and it appears there is a spin-out causing a major backup

  • JayDee January 15, 2012 (1:16 pm)

I came over Gennesse hill by the Gennesse dog par…school in my Forester and traction control was coming on. Charlestown/Spokane/Orleans hill “Snow Closure”so crept back to 49th and it was pretty slippery to Admiral. Admiral to 57th was a tad rocky, and through the miracle of traction control was able to make it up 57th to 56th Ave…but I wouldn’t do it without AWD. Pretty iffy and I wonder what it will be like tonight if we get a decent freeze…

  • S January 15, 2012 (1:17 pm)

Snow is sticking and falling continuously at 35th Ave SW and Morgan St SW. U-Haul and Pizza Hut’s parking lots are covered. Traffic on 35th is a slow crawl. Just watched on car coming down to the light at Morgan slip a little. Traffic coming up Morgan to 35th is also slow going. Roads are covered. Where are the plows and sand trucks?

  • Sue January 15, 2012 (1:20 pm)

Do not take the northbound viaduct. Traffic is stopped, people out of their cars, at the S-curve by Clink stadium.

  • bsmomma January 15, 2012 (1:21 pm)

Just measured 3″ on our patio table in North Admiral. :)

  • Sonya January 15, 2012 (1:27 pm)

Thanks to the a-hole in the silver 4-wheel drive who drove me off the road coming up Admiral. I’m now stuck in my car on the side of the hill with no way out.

  • sam-c January 15, 2012 (1:28 pm)

eyeballing the accumulation on the top of the fence post and it looks like about 2 inches. (in puget ridge)

  • mookie January 15, 2012 (1:29 pm)

Per the scanner, the bridge is a mess, and the south precinct is just now getting their chains on…

  • BB January 15, 2012 (1:30 pm)

I’m really surprised how much is sticking down here at Lincoln Park…the last 45 minutes has seen a big change!

  • S January 15, 2012 (1:32 pm)

35th just had cars bumping into each other. THey are driving on now, so must not have been damage or injuries. I HATE snow!!

  • tommyt January 15, 2012 (1:34 pm)

Just made it home to the Rite Aid area from capital hill. my prius did fine but thanks god there’s so few cars on the road, I think it’s the only reason I made it. I went 4th ave then low bridge to avalon. Again it was fine but that won’t last, this is a perfect set up for icy roads and all that will follow: stuck buses and fender benders galore. I advise If you have to get home do so now and park that car out of harms way. Now for a snow ball fight with the boy.

  • Andrea January 15, 2012 (1:39 pm)

Anyone gone up or down Highland Park Hill in the last half hour?

  • Arbor Hghts Dude January 15, 2012 (1:40 pm)

Just heard on the scanner that 35th Ave @ Alaska is closed. Slow down people, it’s not worth causing an accident. SPD are chaining up and responding to numerous accidents citywide.

  • LK Clark January 15, 2012 (1:42 pm)

Prepared? I just drove downtown and back…took I-5 on the way in to downtown…not too bad but lots of people panicking, stopping unnecessarily, creating a chain reaction. Took First Ave back to WS (wanted to avoid I-5 and Viaduct)…switched to 4th Ave at Jackson…took low bridge and Avalon. Not too bad but didn’t see one bus until I got to 35th and Avalon and saw two buses apparently stuck going up 35th. Saw a 54 heading east on Avalon (not usual route) and drove through Junction/north on Calif. Ave SW and saw a bus abandoned on Calif Ave at WSHS (northbound) abandoned (no chains visible on any buses)…and no DOT trucks, sanders anywhere that I could see – 3.5 inches of snow on my deck in Admiral Dist….staying home for rest of day!

    • WSB January 15, 2012 (1:50 pm)

      Arbor dude – thanks.
      .
LK – important point. I’m not a snow driving expert but I learned from my husband, co-publisher Patrick, who is a CO native. Drive slow. And just don’t stop unless you have to. Slow and steady will get you there. First time I had to drive home from my old tv job in snow many years ago after we moved here, I just followed that – and passed all sorts of spun out people as I chugged slowly up the Gatewood/California SW hill … Be safe, all. We’ll keep updating. – TR

  • linda January 15, 2012 (1:47 pm)

any body been westbound on the West Seattle freeway? Trying to find out the condition on the west high rise. Have someone coming home from work who can chain up under cover if chains are needed.

  • LAP January 15, 2012 (1:53 pm)

It is really sticking and is about 2 inches deep in Westwood Village area – btwn Thistle and Trenton. Looking like Bothell did at 9:30 am when we turned around and high-tailed it out of there!

  • jiggers January 15, 2012 (1:55 pm)

The snow is pounding hard in downtown. I don’t see a salt truck anywhere.

  • datamuse January 15, 2012 (1:57 pm)

Andrea, I wouldn’t try it. I live at the top of Highland Park Way and we’ve accumulated a couple of inches up here in the last hour. It wasn’t bad when the husband and I drove up it at noon but a lot of snow has fallen since then. I’d be surprised if it hasn’t been closed.

  • kristina January 15, 2012 (1:59 pm)

I am on the 54 headed back to west seattle from downtown. Driver warned us it would be a long trip. Snow route.

  • Jwws January 15, 2012 (2:01 pm)

About two inches on Genesee Hill and the dogs are LOVING it, chasing each other around the back yard, creating yellow snow…..

  • jiggers January 15, 2012 (2:01 pm)

Unless you are homeless, stay at home under your blanket and dont come out and cause mess.

  • Been There January 15, 2012 (2:05 pm)

Car blocking a good portion of SW Oregon @ Delridge Way, 23rd up hill from Oregon towards, 21st & SSCC is very slick. No cars coming up. A few going down. Stay off the roads.

  • Really? January 15, 2012 (2:09 pm)

I’ve got tickets to the UW Men’s basketball game tonight – stupid to head to the U-district in this?

  • Yorkie January 15, 2012 (2:12 pm)

came back from Renton at 1:15, I-5 ok, but West Seattle brige was slick. Got off at Delridge and the exit was compact snow/ice- NO snow plows/trucks in sight on exit or bridge! Cars were sliding on exit.

  • East Coast Cynic January 15, 2012 (2:13 pm)

Must be a lot of DOT personnel taking the day off and watching football. A sorry lack of battling the snow considering the conditions which they knew about ahead of time. They probably figured there wouldn’t be enough traffic to make it worth their while today.

  • OP January 15, 2012 (2:14 pm)

Nobody should be stuck in this sloppy wet stuff, really. Nobody. This is easy to get around in.

  • Johnston January 15, 2012 (2:15 pm)

Over 2″ in under 2 hours in Westwood. Glad I don’t have to do anything today!

  • Al January 15, 2012 (2:16 pm)

SW Morgan St. still open, mostly slick slush at this point. 4WD having no problems – if not 4WD put it into low gear and don’t touch the brakes on the way down, or avoid it altogether. Once the temps dip, Morgan will be treacherous as usual.

  • shq January 15, 2012 (2:16 pm)

Just did lower bridge into west seattle. Slushy but fine. Will report on admiral in a moment.

  • Pamela Ford January 15, 2012 (2:16 pm)

Just got word from my husband he is stuck at the alaska Junc…. he got the 128 from Morgan but it had no chains on and was slipping over the road. He has been at the Juction for a while now waiting for either the 54 or 55, But if they are not chained it may be a while. Why did Metro not have the buses chained when they knew the snow was on its way ?.

  • East Coast Cynic January 15, 2012 (2:17 pm)

OP, if you consider our topography and the lack of WSDOT maintenance of the roads, it is very troublesome.

  • Walkabout Wolf January 15, 2012 (2:21 pm)

Over two inches in Arbor Heights – most of that in the past hour or so.

  • smokeycretin9 January 15, 2012 (2:22 pm)

Roxbury is down to one stop and go lane headed east. Is meyers way closed or slow?

  • smokeycretin9 January 15, 2012 (2:22 pm)

  • Ron January 15, 2012 (2:22 pm)

    Stopped snowing on Alki.

Able to see clear skies now.

    Don’t drive if u don’t have to!

  • shq January 15, 2012 (2:23 pm)

Admiral up to junction from bridge is slow slushy but fine. Snowplow just passed going downhill. Not bad but if it freezes it will be bad.

  • smokeycretin9 January 15, 2012 (2:25 pm)

    http://youtu.be/Z3NoWTDObZI

  • Diane January 15, 2012 (2:27 pm)

now even more grateful I parked up top of hill on the flat, as the hill where I usually park is filled with kids sledding & stand-up-boarding, and crashing into parked cars

  • Julia January 15, 2012 (2:29 pm)

Conditions on Delridge and Andover next to WS Bridge are slushy but passable. Delridge onramp is clear. Be safe out there everyone!

  • linda January 15, 2012 (2:30 pm)

@ Really: depends on how you feel about driving home on ice. All that slush is going to freeze as the sun goes down, so roads which are navigable now will turn into skating rinks. Even if they get out the road crews in force, their priority will be clearing bus routes. If your route doesn’t mirror a bus route, you’ll be on your own on what will be very icy roads.

  • teachergreg January 15, 2012 (2:32 pm)

From north of downtown to west seattle was terrible. The viaduct had the customary abandoned cars, the upper bridge looked bad, the lower bridge was a parking lot. I went up highland and it was decent but only because there was no traffic. Had to honk at several pedestrians to get them to move out of the middle of the street. Good times.

  • Christina January 15, 2012 (2:36 pm)

Just drove home from the Farmers Market. California was slushy but passable. Thistle was a bit trickier as there weren’t clear car tracks. There were also a few inexperienced drivers in over their heads. 35th to 106th had some bare spots and some slush. 106th and all the side streets in Shorewood were snowy and not so great driving. I wouldn’t go out without my snow tires or AWD/4WD around here. Too many hills.

  • jiggers January 15, 2012 (2:36 pm)

I now see patches of blue skies. It’s over for now.

  • crowe January 15, 2012 (2:37 pm)

We have at least 4-5 inches up on 16th & Thistle. Beautiful!

  • robin January 15, 2012 (2:38 pm)

any reports on California Ave. hill in Gatewood?

    • WSB January 15, 2012 (2:55 pm)

Just back from driving to A-Heights again. 35th appears to have been sanded. I am guessing most road conditions on arterials are better now but side streets can be treacherous – I almost got stuck on one (thanks to the nice guy who talked me out) – will be going out to look but if anyone’s been lately, updates appreciated! – TR

  • S January 15, 2012 (2:39 pm)

35th by Morgan St SW is wet and slushy. Traffic cruising along as if it were bare and wet. Be careful out there. Have 3 inches of snow on my balcony railings. That’s got to equal a lot of slush on the ground. Be smart peeps!

  • Steve January 15, 2012 (2:42 pm)

Just came down California ave to alki. No problems roads are all clear now

  • andrea January 15, 2012 (2:46 pm)

Datamuse, thanks! We are at the top of othello and HPK… just getting down othello looked to be a little scary. Looks like a walk to 7-11 is in our future for some snowed in snacks :)

  • Stacey January 15, 2012 (2:51 pm)

Is 35th at Alaska open again?

  • W.S. maverick January 15, 2012 (2:52 pm)

its nice I can’t believe people with four wheel drives abandoned their vehicles in the middle of the road

  • me on 28th Ave SW January 15, 2012 (3:06 pm)

    @robin
We just drove up California then left onto Thistle. The snow has stopped and there are clear “tire paths”. No problem at all going slow-n-steady. People appear to be using common sense which always helps! Not as much traffic on the roads right now either.

  • Marie January 15, 2012 (3:08 pm)

Just arrived at UW via Fauntleroy (uphill blocked by stuck bus down was fine but single-lane), awful Hwy 99 (N-bound slowed because of distracting slid cars S-bound, groan), Mercer closed because SLU Trolley is off the tracks, and clear but slushy express lanes northbound. NOT looking forward to drive home after temps drop below freezing after dark.

  • kristina January 15, 2012 (3:13 pm)

Metro 54 got me home. :) alternate alternate route – we took the first ave s bridge. When it freezes tonight it is going to turn all this slush into a skating rink….be safe! I will be sipping hot tea reading wendell berry….bliss. soup for supper!

  • sam-c January 15, 2012 (3:14 pm)

so is the viaduct cleared up by now? now that the snow sorta stopped, surely they’ve sanded / salted it?

  • Really? January 15, 2012 (3:17 pm)

@Linda – good thoughts. I’m staying home. Game is on TV, and it’s nice and warm here. It could get ugly out there later on.

  • timh2o January 15, 2012 (3:22 pm)

Just drove up and back to Green Lake to pick up my little one and it was easy most of the way, a little slush and hardpack on the new road near Safco on 99 but nothing to worry about. Of course I saw a few “skilled drivers” flying by and some tailgaters.

  • HunterG January 15, 2012 (3:35 pm)

Fauntleroy in the Gatewood area is smooth sailing! Get your provisions for tomorrow now, folks!

  • question January 15, 2012 (4:23 pm)

Oy… couple hour journey from capitol hill to alki. tried driving, too dangerous, had to walk down pike from broadway to third busses stuck on side of the road all the way down. caught 56 runnong only 15 mins late. no problems from there did see several busses on yesler and jackson on side of road and one up on side walk stuck

  • Patrick January 15, 2012 (4:24 pm)

Hey guys, please stay tuned here for updates, I have been looking at the models and it now appears we could and I emphasize could as of right now that all of western Washington is now under the gun for a very significant snow event starting Tuesday afternoon per ALL OF THE MODELS. NOAA is actually dropping radio sondes into the storm progged to hit our area ( Near Hawaii right now ) to get a clearer picture of what’s going on within the mid and upper levels, as of right now all indications are that all areas of W. Washington will likely see significant snowfall starting early to mid afternoon Tuesday lasting until at the very least mid to late morning Wednesday, however there are several models indicating that the cold air will actually stick around well into the late Wednesday night early Thursday morning time period thus inflating the snowfall rates around the area. I looked at a point forecast for my GF’s location in Edmonds and it is showing snowfall amounts on the order of 9-18 inches total for the aforementioned time frame. PLEASE PLEASE stay tuned here and local media as this is now an evolving and developing situation that warrants watching given current data. Also NOAA notes in their afternoon AFD package that Winter Storm Watches are likely to be posted with the later Staff shifts.

  • Jiggers January 15, 2012 (4:33 pm)

It’s fun sleeping outside in the snow. .No need pay rent. You get the park to yourself.

  • Diane January 15, 2012 (5:04 pm)

snow plow just went up 37th, at Hinds, in Admiral
    ~
and now snowing tons of big flakes

  • scout 1 January 15, 2012 (5:08 pm)

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!!!!

  • transplantella January 15, 2012 (5:08 pm)

    Snowing again, Lowman Beach area.

Right around sundown I looked out my west window where I can see Southworth and across the Puget Sound.

The sky was pinkish purplish lavenderish color. This is the color of snow.

It was the same color yesterday about sundown. I knew it was going to snow today. I don’t need no weatherman.

Patrick, we all really do appreciate your work looking forward for us, BUT one question. Why are you the only dooms sayer out of all the N.W. Meteorologists? Not one of the t.v. stations are calling for more than another inch or two. What gives?

    Thanks,

  • rockergirl5678 January 15, 2012 (5:20 pm)

Snowing again in HIGH Point area! Coming down good and hard! Beautiful as night falls.

  • Christie January 15, 2012 (5:21 pm)

Does anyone know about the bus route 5 that turns into the 54? my daughter is about to get on that route but wants to know how long she will be on the bus. Thanks

  • JA January 15, 2012 (5:23 pm)

@smokeycretin9 NOAA is calling for 4-6 inches Wednesday. Given that they were saying less than an inch today, Patrick may not be that far off. Just sayin’.

  • miws January 15, 2012 (5:25 pm)

Jiggers, please stay as safe and warm as possible.

@ Smokey, the reason why I post the info I do is because I am a realist and not a tv Meteorologist and therefore not subject to mediation from editors or news directors who don’t want to freak out the masses. There is a difference between tv weather folk and myself, I analyze weather models, radio sonde data, monitor the mid and upper levels for development and so many other factors associated with weather that tv mets are prevented from doing because of the time constraint associated with being an on air weather person. As such, my ability to analyze and decipher atmospheric conditions continuously allows me the ability to see any changes at a moments notice and relay that information to whomever that much quickly versus any media outlet. Now I am not trying to come of as a know-it-all but I am able to see the dynamics at play a lot better and more often than Say Steve Pool or Rebecca Stevenson or Jeff Renner etc. etc. I hope this helps but most often than not the tv media and their weather people almost always forecast incorrectly in regards to snow around here b/c of the time constraints they are under.

    • WSB January 15, 2012 (5:51 pm)

I do want to stand up for the honor of TV meteorologists, editors, and news directors, having been two out of the three. There is no “don’t want to freak out the masses” conspiring going on. Trust me. Time constraints, yes. Wildly different skill sets, yes. Frankly, again, having been a TV news executive and show producer for more than 20 years, “freaking out the masses” is better TV, but only if there’s reason to freak people out. Also note that not all TV weatherpeople are meteorologists (at least one longtime weather guy in this market is not – though he works with meteorologists, a luxury most of the others don’t have – they have to do it all themselves). I remember working with somebody we called a “weatherologist.” Not that there’s any such thing. Anyway, I worked last with Walter Kelley and MJ McDermott, both of whom were very professional, very skilled, very geeky about every little thing they consulted, and often fairly accurate, more so than most of the others I worked with in my TV career. I don’t have any idea how they’ve been doing with this week’s weather, though, because I try to avoid watching TV – TR

Oh, now the fun starts. Snowmobiles and quads coming down my street. I guess they’d be too identifiable in the daylight.

  • Diane January 15, 2012 (5:45 pm)

snow plow just went down 37th, at Hinds, in Admiral
    ~
and now snow stopped, so clear driving on 37th, which is major thoroughfare up here

  • karen January 15, 2012 (5:50 pm)

If you follow the forecast discussions, they have been saying pretty much what Patrick has. Right now they are predicting another 2-4 inches tomorrow and “QUITE SIGNIFICANT” amounts by Wednesday night.
Here in Westwood we got about 5 inches on our back deck, and it’s snowing again.
I’ll take Patrick’s knowledge and prepare for the worst. If we only get another inch – so what? At least my shopping is done and my gas tank is full.

  • Karl January 15, 2012 (5:57 pm)

    What is a “radiosonde”?

Thank you WSB for all that you do!

  • smokeycretin9 January 15, 2012 (6:06 pm)

THanks Patrick and T.R. for the clarification. I can only hope you are wrong. (for the sake of my Boxwood hedge and bamboo)

    :)

  • nw ryan January 15, 2012 (7:45 pm)

Freaking out the masses is not their plan. Serving the community is. A lot of these people spend the majority of their life studying weather.
We all have jobs and want to do them to our best ability. I don’t think the weather folks in town are any different.

  • Scooterista January 15, 2012 (7:53 pm)

I just walked from Dawson down California to the Westside UU Church and back. California is pretty clear and everyone was making it up the hill south of the church. However, it is icing up out there. In the hour I was gone, it went from slushy on the sideways and side streets to iced up and slippery. Be really, really midful of black ice out there, folks, and drive with caution. Just because a road surface looks bare and wet doesn’t mean it isn’t actually covered with a sheen of ice. Tomorrow morning will likely be very, very icy, given that there are few clouds at the moment and plenty of melted snow to freeze up.

Alot of weather men, just go off what noaa says in there forecast and puts there own twist on it!Im sorry wsb, But patrick is right on this one for sure. But alot of it is they dont want to say there is gonna be 20 inchs 3days before the storm and then when it gets here we only get 2 inchs. They are going off mostly what noaa says, but when they know for sure then they will say.

  • D1 January 15, 2012 (8:21 pm)

Dont get me wrong im not trying to talk down about them.they just dont want to look like fools so there going with the least amount of snow for the moment untell they know for sure.

  • datamuse January 15, 2012 (8:25 pm)

It is definitely getting icy out there. I went out for a dinner date at 5:30 and the roads were wet and slushy. Came home around 7:30 and hit a couple of icy patches between the Junction and Highland Park. Wasn’t too bad but some of those curving side streets are getting a little hairy. Be careful out there!

  • D1 January 15, 2012 (8:48 pm)

@Patrick,When you get the new model runs in. give us the breakdown thanks!

  • Kelly January 15, 2012 (8:49 pm)

Field report: Drove to downtown via Delridge, upper bridge, I-5 at 4:30 PM, returned via the same route at 8:00 PM. No issues in either direction, although Thistle looked frosty we didn’t lose traction at any time.
    .
I still wouldn’t recommend driving since it’s only going to get icier from here on out–I’ll be busing tomorrow (and dressing warmly for long wait times).

    • WSB January 15, 2012 (8:53 pm)

Thank you. Evening reports appreciated, I’ll summarize them in the still-to-come evening update (still trying to get through one non-snow story before publishing it). No major problems that we’ve heard of, but it’s a-freezing out there, per the WSB Weather page: https://westseattleblog.com/west-seattle-weather

  • D1 January 15, 2012 (9:03 pm)

The WSB is awesome, Just wanted to say thanks for all the news and info! Thank You WSB.

At 11:45 pm Sunday MANY streets that have NOT been treated are a sheet of Ice.Please be careful.

  • IcyDevil January 15, 2012 (11:52 pm)

Hi everyone, I am hoping someone in a very specific area of West Seattle will read this and help me out with some insight. I took a friend home this evening to The Overlook at Westridge…it’s at 7th Ave SW and SW Kenyon. Well anyways, it is a huge hill, totally coated in ice and I couldn’t get back out. Well a 20 block walk ;ater I am now at home, however I really, really want to get my car back home before this predicted next round of snow arrives starting tomorrow morning. Does anyone reading this have experience with that particular hill? Will Sdot salt/cinder it? Have they in the past? Will the Overlook at Westridge salt a couple of tracks up the hill so their residents can get out? Does someone live near there and be willing to advise me of an update tomorrow mid day perhaps so I don’t have to walk all the way there only to find I am still stuck, then have to walk all the way home yet again? Any input from amyone knowledgeable about this particular hill in the past and present is SOOO appreciated!

    • WSB January 15, 2012 (11:55 pm)

Hi. First – we’ve moved on to an evening story, though I probably failed to put the URL here, sorry. Second – SDOT does not sand secondaries. Only main arterials. I can’t speak to whether the property managers will salt etc. – you might try reposting this in the morning coverage we’ll be starting around 6 am, or the evening coverage we have up now: https://westseattleblog.com/2012/01/west-seattle-snow-sunday-night-notes-and-more-photos

  • IcyDevil January 16, 2012 (12:05 am)

Thanks WSB as always! I will copy and paste this from here to your 6am posting.

  • sam-c January 16, 2012 (7:09 am)

regarding TV weather reports and otherwise. I didn’t watch news yesterday, but on this morning’s news they were warning of the potential big snow late Tuesday/ early Wednesday, as Patrick mentioned. from what I could tell it depended on how the storm reacted with the low that is currently over the area. so it’s not like they are just throwing darts at a weather chart for their predictions

  • W.S. maverick January 16, 2012 (8:15 am)

do they make chains for bicycles?

Love that shot with Brent Amaker. Awesome. I love West Seattle.

Sorry, comment time is over.
