Video: Mid-afternoon wildlife break, from West Seattle waters

Unless you are jellyfish-phobic, the video is so tranquil, it seems as if it could be a screensaver. Diver/photographer Laura James watched that lion’s-mane jellyfish north of Alki Point last night, and shared the video early today. We recently featured some of her other work – chronicling the outfall pipes off West Seattle shores, which provides a visual reminder of the importance of the runoff-reducing Tox-Ick campaign.

I’ve seen some pretty awesome stuff on this blog before, but that might be the winner! Tough call, though, the owl and whale and hawk and eagle and coyote pictures have just been so much fun to view this year! Thanks so much to everybody that contributes this kind of material to the blog. It truly makes my day!

    Why don’t I scuba dive?

I always love finding the lion’s mane jellies when I dive. Another very cool, large jelly we have locally is the egg-yolk jelly which is just as big but more stout!

Ocean acidification will make this beautiful and ominous scene much more common in the future.

Very cool!! Any chance anyone knows how big this guy was? It looked pretty sizable compared to the divers….

I shiver when I watch this. I was stung all over my body while swimming at Lincoln Park this July. Boats unfortunately cut these “gorgeous creatures” into small pieces, and their tentacles stay live (and can sting) for a month or more.

I was in a swimsuit only, and accidentally struck the lion’s mane jellyfish with my right hand and forearm. The red burn lasted a couple of days. The anguish took 10 hours to leave the rest of my body. Really scary–I had to sit at the lifeguard station at Colman Pool for 3 hours until I could hobble back up the hill to my car. My feet were so stung it felt like I was walking on glass.

I have always swum with jellyfish, but never had a painful encounter before this. Take heed, swimmers–bring vinegar and Benadryl in your swim bag. And don’t be dumb and take a shower like I did–that made it so much worse.

Sorry, comment time is over.
