West Seattle Crime Watch: 1 arrest after Fauntleroy search

4:12 PM: After a few notes and calls, we checked out major police activity this past hour near the Fauntleroy ferry dock. According to police on the scene as well as scanner traffic, a possible burglary in progress was reported. However, police say, no burglary after all – but they were still trying to find the people who had been seen possibly trying to break into a house; the only description we heard was white, male, early 20s, one in a red hat, last seen possibly eastbound on SW Director (which is the street that’s just north of the Fauntleroy Creek overlook across from the dock). 4:28 PM UPDATE: There’s a new call of a possible prowler, maybe related, just a bit east/uphill. Meantime, we’ve added a photo from the earlier search. 4:50 PM UPDATE: Scanner traffic indicates a possible suspect has been detained. We’ll be checking for more information on whether that led to an arrest.

5:53 PM UPDATE: Just talked with Brian, the nearby resident whose tip appears to have led police to the suspect. Brian lives near Fauntleroy Creek and was startled to look out a window and see “this guy walking through the back yard.” After seeing the guy walk on to open the gate, Brian went out and asked the man what he was doing. The man claimed to have been lost in the woods. Brian went back in the house and called 911 to ask if they were looking for anyone in Fauntleroy; and of course, they were. He then called some neighbors to alert them – and the neighbors told him a whole bunch of police had just rolled up, and found the suspect. (Brian says he was told they were going to detain the suspect on warrants that were out for his arrest; we’re still working on getting official information.) “I was impressed,” Brian told us. “From the time I saw him walking through the back yard, it was maybe five minutes (till they arrived) – they were right on top of it. There’s no reason for anybody to be in my back yard!”

7:26 PM UPDATE: Police confirm this all started with someone reporting “2 suspicious males attempting to enter a residence in the 9100 block of Fauntleroy Way SW.” Police talked with one suspect shortly after that 3 pm report, according to Southwest Precinct commander Capt. Steve Paulsen, who says it all wound up with one arrest. Since no actual burglary happened, that arrest was for criminal trespass plus “miscellaneous warrants” including one for escape. Capt. Paulsen adds:

The Southwest Precinct would like to thank all of the citizens who called 911 when they observed the suspicious behavior at the residence as well as calling 911 after observing one of the subjects running through yards. It was your watchful eye and knowledge of your neighborhood that helps keep West Seattle as one of the safest places to live.

A similar sentiment from Lt. Alan Williams: “Once again, the Community-Police partnership has made life difficult for criminals in our area!”

ADDED 11:30 PM: From area resident Natascha:

I wanted to respond to your story and also provide my feedback and strong support for the Seattle police department. I had left my patio door open while working in my home office. After my dogs did not stop barking for quite some time, I left my conference call to find 6 police officers surronding my house and asking if they could search the premises for the suspect who was seen in my backyard. I was very impressed with the action of the police officers and response to the calls from the neighbors. Nice to know that everyone takes prowlers seriously and want to keep our amazing neighborhood safe. Having relocated from LA this is definitely refreshing!

My neighbor and I saw this guy walk in front of my house on SW Donovan street at around 4:28pm, and then as the police cruiser was coming around the corner the guy disappeared. My older lady neighbor that walked by with her dog saw him also, white guy in 20’s with an Ipod plugged in. My other neighbor saw him dash between his house and mine and jump into my yard and then bounded over my fence. I’m upset because he broke my garden gargoyle!

Nice work SPD, hopefully this shuts up the speeders who complain you only focus on keeping 35th safe.

I’m upset because recently it feels like our entire neighborhood’s privacy and safety are constantly being invaded or compromised. I never used to be anxious about being home alone all day with my baby, but I’ve now had someone arrested in my yard, last week I opened the door to multiple DOC officers in bulletproof vests, a month ago the apartment building next door was surrounded by cops and I couldn’t leave my home, and of course there’s everything you read here. It’s ridiculous.

On the other hand, I am very impressed with SPD in our neighborhood. At least we’ve got that going for us.

that photo was actually taken at the intersection of 45th and Trenton. and there was also an arrest made along fauntleroy way around 3:20 this afternoon but the police were still canvassing the streets for another person long after that.

Our photographer said 45th/Henderson. If you say Trenton, I’ll just take the cross-street out. Don’t know about the other arrest, I still don’t even have official info on this one. Thanks – TR

Great teamwork Brian, his neighbors and SPD.

Good to see neighbors/neighborhoods comming together! A couple of years ago I noticed a car with a man inside on my dead end street. He looked weired, was watching kids play. It was just not normal.I had a gut feeling that this guy was up to no good so I called the cops to report. The man drove away slowly as I read his plates to the 911 dispatch. We made eye contact and he smiled as he made a U-turn. The next day I received a call from a Seattle Police Detective who wanted to know if the man made any comments or gestures to the children. He was a sex offender! My Husband use to tell me I’m nosey and not to call the police or take down license plate #s but I’m sure glad I did. I may have saved a innocent child from harm…

Can we get a description of the person arrested? I called 911 (3 times) on April 22nd because of a suspicious person running through yards trying to hide something under his sweatshirt in the Westwood Area, on 32nd & Henderson.
It seems the next day, someone reported their house had been robbed that day on 32nd and Cloverdale. Then a burglary on 45th and Roxbury and then another one on 38th and Barton within about a week time span and in the same general vicinity.
Also someone replied to my description of the person and said it matched the description of the person that robbed someone not all that long ago at gun point.
Here is the description of the person I saw: white male brown hair (medium length above the shoulder or maybe longer possibly tucked under a baseball cap) with a brown (short) beard. Average build, between 5’9 to 6’0. Between late 20′s or early 30′s. Wearing a gray sweatshirt with dark pants, I believe a black baseball hat with a blue colored bill, wearing black gloves.
I think that there is obviously a serial burglar out there and networking can help put this to a stop.

Shady people wearing gloves during the day at this time of year should warrant a 911 call.
    .
Also if you see a guy with a pair of socks in his back pocket should attract your attention too. It doesn’t take too long to put the socks on your hands which acts like gloves and doesn’t look as suspicious.
    .
Yes, not all my friends were honest…

Of course, this is why I called 911, not to mention that he was also trying to hide something under his sweatshirt as he was running around in a panic with no direction.
I not only called 911, I called them 3 times. I also followed the guy giving them an update on the 2nd call where the man’s location was. Unfortuntately he started to run through people’s yards and I was told not to follow any further. I tried running back and forth between the alley and the street to see if he was either making a B line or backtracking, but I didn’t see him after the 2nd call.
What is also unfortunate is that I had to make a 3rd call to 911 to ask them if I somehow gave them the wrong address, which was verified that I did give them the correct address. The reason i asked, is because looking at my call history on my cell phone, it said that in between my 2nd and 3rd call (not my 1st and 3rd call), it had been close to 10 minutes that passed.
What is also unfortunate, is that when the cops showed up, they talked with some neighbors in the area that also saw this person running through the backyards and they didn’t call 911.
I did as much as I could about the situation. I even went and checked the 35th-Henderson library after the police showed up and the local mini-marts.

Great work Brian, his neighbors and the SPD! I love to hear that he called 911 AND called his neighbors. That network is so important in keeping your neighborhood safe. When there’s nowhere to hide and everyone is connected, the criminals can’t compete.

Hoping that this is the guy that broke into our house on Friday by shooting his way in with the BB gun! We discovered that an iPod was stolen, but that was it.

Sorry, comment time is over.
