West Seattle Weather Watch: Small slide south of Endolyne

Thanks to Jen for sending that photo and word of a small mudslide along the slope east of the spot where 45th SW, Marine View Drive, and SW Roxbury meet (map), just south of/uphill from the Endolyne area of Fauntleroy. We went to take a quick look; it’s not affecting the road, but as Jen pointed out, “It is blocking the big gutter below, which if we get a bunch of rain could impact those homes down the street.” She reported it to Seattle Public Utilities, since the drainage ditch/gutter is likely their jurisdiction.

Yet another example of landslides and tree destruction by greedy hillside developers and fat cat trophy homeowners.
Why is anyone allowed to build on this hillside?

    Nulu,

the greedy developers are a long time fauntleroy resident who built his home way up the hill far from the slide probably back in the early 60’s. Its a far cry from a trophy home, but he does top his trees every few years to maintain his view of the sound.

I think part of the problem is that a lot of the folks on this hillside top/cut the trees below them and then leave all the cuttings on the slope. It not only looks ugly but I’m guessing that the weight of the cut limbs weighs down the slope causing slides like this to happen.
It is doing a lot of damage to the property and potentially putting their home at risk.

J, we have been curious about this, glad you mentioned it. A bit south of there heading up the hill in the same area a number of [trees? shrubs?] have recently been cut and just left there as you describe. Is that public or private land? If private, one can understand wanting the view but it’d be nice if the “trimmer(s)” finished their job and cleaned up; if public, should they be cutting in the first place?

grew up in Fauntleroy as did I.
That hillside has been sliding since before the cut for Marine View Drive was made. Those trees were not even there back in the day. They are volunteers that are multi-trunked and dangerous. They should be removed. They do not hold up the hillside nor do their trimmings cause a slide. These trees are far more dangerous than the multi-trunked maple you cut down in the SDOT right of way next to the Orchard Street Ravine Park last month. It would be great if some of the tree experts with skills and equipment like you would take on some of the real dangerous trees out.

Sorry, comment time is over.
