Video: Denny International Middle School’s winter concert

The “William Tell Overture” – by steel drums! That was just one of the highlights in a night full of music by Denny International Middle School students, performing their Winter Concert across SW Thistle Street at Chief Sealth International High School‘s remodeled auditorium – next door to the new school Denny will occupy later this year. We also have video highlights from seven more of the groups that performed Thursday night as the culmination of four months of hard work – click ahead!

That’s the Denny Jazz Band, with music director Marcus Pimpleton, one of four band groups on the program; this Saturday, they’re off to the Central Washington University Jazz Festival in Ellensburg (along with Chief Sealth’s Jazz Band 2). Next clip, the Senior Band:

Here’s the Junior Band (student conductors for their two songs were Ryan Maroney and Sam Orlin; our clip features the 1st song):

Also working hard to learn as part of the Beginning Band, these young musicians:

Now, to the orchestra groups, conducted by Heather Carman. We have video of two of the four groups that performed, starting with the Combined Orchestras:

And here’s the Beginning Group from the Denny Junior Orchestra:

Last but not least, the World Music Choir, a vocal and instrumental ensemble, was on the program too:

The Winter Concert program included a long list of upcoming dates for the Denny musicians and their supporters, including a Denny Music Booster Meeting next Wednesday, January 26, 7 pm at the school library, for “parents interested in helping with event and fundraiser coordination” – including volunteers for events from the Jazz Band Dinner to marching-band parades. (First one of those on the schedule, by the way, is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade downtown, noon Saturday, March 12th.) As mentioned when Denny announced this concert, some of its band musicians are invited to play Disneyland, and they’re raising money for scholarships; here’s how you can pitch in. There’ll also be a fundraiser on February 19th, billed as a Black History Music Benefit, 7 pm at the Chief Sealth auditorium.

Great job by all those kids and their music instructors. It was great to see a packed house last night. And thanks WSB, for the great coverage of these events. The kids especially enjoy seeing these video clips on the blog.

Really fun to hear all the kids play last night! Especially neat to see the student conductors do such a great job and music groups growing bigger and more accomplished with each concert! Thank you for such fantastic coverage and support of the Denny Music Program on the blog!

It was a great concert and I hope the performers and teachers feel proud. They did a beautiful job on some challenging pieces, with close to 900 people staring at them the whole time. I hope each kid keeps on playing, singing and conducting. Thanks, Patrick, for recording part of the show.
