Mass for Tony Genzale tomorrow; hundreds at Rosary last night

Tomorrow morning is the Funeral Mass for Anthony Genzale of Tony’s Market fame (10:30 am, St. Francis of Assisi in Burien); last night, hundreds gathered for the Rosary in his memory, covered by Seattle Weekly managing editor Mike Seely (a West Seattleite). In his report, Mike writes that the tributes shared to remember Tony during that first service included excerpts from the 60+ WSB comments regarding his untimely death (just 61; here’s his official obituary).

Joey, if you see this, I’m the one who told you in September about my dad just having gotten the “all clear” on his battle with Pancreatic Cancer. You asked me to tell Tony the next time I saw him, but I never got the chance. I’m so sorry for that. It could so easily be me who lost my dad, and I can only imagine how devastating it is.

I will miss Tony more than I can ever express. He was everything that’s special about West Seattle — the love, the sense of community, the asking how you are and REALLY wanting to know the answer. He was a true class act.

Tonys whole family, if you need anything, if we can do anything, please say the word. Your family has given so much to this community. I hope that you’re receiving it back a thousand fold in love and support right now.

Tony helped us choose the raspberries that we made jam out of for our holiday gifts. Thanks so much for the care you showed and the treats you put aside for our chickens. You’ll be missed!

I am so so very sorry to hear of Tony’s passing just now. I live in the south end but when I made a trip to West Seattle, I made a point to ‘stop at Tony’s’ to get the best fresh supply of fruits and veggies. Tony was always there with a smile and a helpful suggestion. He will be missed by many and my sympathies go out to his family.

Sorry, comment time is over.
