Looking back at West Seattle’s 2010, #2: The offbeat stories

While continuing to put together the WSB take on 2010’s top 10 stories (coming up later), we came across three that seemed to deserve a retrospective all their own – the three offbeat stories covered here in 2010.

#3 – The Westwood Village Target flash mob:

It happened in August – here’s our original story, as a Vashon-based political-action group chose West Seattle’s target for a musical political protest.

#2 – The floating cow off Alki:

This happened in March – here’s our original story. A TV crew following up on our first report knocked on doors in the area and finally turned up the neighbors who ‘fessed up.

#1 – SDOT’s first hacked signboard in years:

This happened in September – here’s our original story. The sign near 18th and Dawson was restored to its original message within about five hours of our report; SDOT said it was the first time in three years one of their signs had been, shall we say, reprogrammed without authorization.

…and Target has had my undying and growing support ever since…

One thing I love about the internet (not really), that bigots and homophobes just cant resist letting everyone know how they feel. I’ve got news for you. Open minded and accepting people outnumber you and we will live happy lives while you live in your hateful and unfulfilled world.

As with Wal-mart, I will NEVER set foot in Target. Even if they are the last store on the face of the earth.

It was really cool what those Target folks were able to accomplish in raising awareness. I just dig it when folks stick up for what they believe in…even if it’s WSC there, who’s just a little hurt that he wasn’t invited to the sing-a-long.

Sorry, comment time is over.
