West Seattle HS football returns to field tonight, post-forfeit

(WSB photo from WSHS practice on Thursday)
All three of West Seattle’s high-school football teams lost last week – but none as visibly as West Seattle High School, which forfeited to O’Dea High School while down 48-0 at halftime, in pounding rain at West Seattle Stadium. We talked on Thursday with Coach Davis Lura, who says the team’s challenges include the fact they are going into tonight’s game against Franklin High School (7 pm, SWAC) with about 20 players dealing with some sort of injury: “(The number is) up, it’s down, it changes every day,” he told us, saying that’s been the situation since the season began with a non-conference match against Eisenhower HS (from Yakima). The emotional health of the team is good, though, according to Coach Lura, who says practice has been going well – he says no clear leader has emerged but about half a dozen of the players are sharing leadership roles, with spirits remaining high. The coach says Franklin has its best team in 10 years; last week, they beat Nathan Hale. And his players are aware they’re going in with a very limited squad – but they’re looking ahead to more players being able to come back in the weeks ahead, from academic probation as well as injuries, looking to the big Chief Sealth and Rainier Beach games later this fall.

Go Indians! Beat back the Quakers!

Uh… that’s NOT the Wildcat/Indians. WSHS does not wear blue helmets, but gold… Home and away.
That may be Wildcats, but not WSHS.

That’s one of the junior football “Westside Wildcats” teams.

I checked with Patrick – he met Coach Lura for the interview at Hiawatha while he was working with the players in our photo. If these concerns had been noted here earlier he would have had the opportunity to ask the coach for ID’s in person, since he was covering tonight’s WSHS-Franklin game. But that’s over now so all we can do re: IDs is check with the WSHS AD on Monday – TR

That’s a lot of injuries! Coaching staff have a role in that- likely poor/overly aggressive conditioning. Pls becareful!

Well, while Lura may have been “working w/ these children”, they are NOT the WSHS varsity squad. They practiced at Madison. I know several of the players and parents. MOTS is correct. Whether it was Lura or not is not really the issue. The team does not have alternate blue practice helmets and pants… gold for home, away AND practice. But if it wasn’t Lura, and they represented that they were, maybe checking creds would be a good policy moving forward?
Please do not omit my comment for candid content. I am part of the community, and a community with growing concerns.
    Thx.

Looks like it woulda been a wise decision to forfiet this game also as there are not enough players to go out and play a game against teams that outnumber and outsize these young men who are going out and giving it their all only to be injured and suffering huge losses. Perhaps it is time to take into consideration that there is a definite flaw somewhere in the coaching to put those boys at such careless risks..

WSHS got skunked today by the Q U A K E R S. All good though WS did what they can, they really do have lots of fragile players.

Seems to me that Lura has had consistent success over several years with the Wildcats. Perhaps some of you should check the history. Not only has he conditioned this team, but they are able to play offense and defense with spirits remaining high. The kids and the coach are fighters. Perhaps parents of ineligible students should pay more attention to their grades and partake in their education. Safety first, for the rest which the coaches watch carefully; thus, injured players are not playing. If you can’t figure that out you shouldn’t be watching high school football…try NFL instead.

Wow way to act SEAHAWK staff..I believe this is What most of the folks are talking about in their thread of comments. The team is not in question and YES they seem to be trying very hard to do the job but strongly disagree with the safety issue. Have seen injured players return to the field and in my opinion that is poor judgement on the part of the LEADERS. Issuing insults and insinuations to parents of your team that can’t seem to achieve accademically is in very poor taste..I sincerely hope this gets posted. Will end comments on this one.
