‘Missing mural’ followup: ‘Press Day’ going back up right now

Thanks to Dave G for the tip – we’re just back from confirming, and photographing, the fact that the “Press Day” mural is going back up on the north side of the Terry Gangon Insurance Agency building in The Junction right now. We’ve reported on its “disappearance” the past two days – Ken Beres sent us a note wondering what happened; the agency told us it was removed so work could be done on their building, but promised it would be back – and this is even sooner than they’d said! The photo is also proof of something we’d heard but hadn’t been previously aware of – some of the two-decades-old West Seattle murals are on removable panels. The crew here says they’ll be done within a few hours. (Thanks again to Ken and Dave for sharing the news – here’s how to reach WSB any time.)

With all due respect to the mural(s) itself….I think it is so out of place there!!! In fact, all but one (the one on the side of the old feed and seed store looks ok) look out of place! Wrong Wrong Wrong!!! Why not put all the murals in a park or something where it looks more appropiate- I think it
makes the junction look even more unflattering then it already does. Part of art is knowing where to put it!

I don’t see what’s “out of place” having the Murals in such places as “Banking Day” on the side of the former :( WAMU branch, “Morgan St. Market” on the back of the former Olsen’s Drugs building (Morgan Starbucks), which is across California from the former Market (where Thriftway is). And, isn’t the one on the side of the Junction Post Office, related to that? (I’m embarrassed to say I’m having trouble picturing it in my mind right now).

Also, the company that produces The Banana Pages is located in the Gagnon building, and if memory serves, that’s what the original installation of “Press Day” was related to.

It’s great to see the mural back in place! So glad they took care to preserve it while repainting the building. Thank you WSB for following up on this!

Kristi, all of the murals depict some aspect of West Seattle history, so they are not “out of place”. Part of the fun is walking around the neighborhood to discover them.

Sorry, comment time is over.
