Update: Car crashes through fence at 35th/Avalon

ORIGINAL 9:27 PM REPORT: This call was originally dispatched as a “heavy rescue” but has already been downgraded after crews reported nobody was trapped in a vehicle after all – according to the scanner, it’s a car over an embankment at 35th and Avalon; thanks to those who texted us the tip. We just arrived and the fire units have all cleared, which suggests no injuries; will have a photo of the car (and info on traffic effects, if any) shortly. 9:39 PM UPDATE: Photo added, courtesy Mike Heavey (who we’d just seen while covering the 34th District Democrats‘ meeting an hour ago). Meantime, WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand reports from the scene that police say the driver went through the fence – northbound side of the street, about 100 yards south of the stalled (and recently sold) development site – while swerving to avoid another vehicle. Nobody hurt; no traffic effects.

Great! The fence is already a total mess along there because someone or something keeps tunneling up to 35th from the Stadium side! Now maybe that dangerous stretch of sidewalk and fence will be repaired! I am happy that no one was hurt – that is most important, above all.

The damage to the fence is due to yet another car plowing into it a couple of years back.

    Glad no one was hurt.

The appearance of this “gateway” into West Seattle is pathetic. The same fence has been damaged for years, the bus stop is a wreck. Then you get to look across the street at the Redline that appears to be a total dive on the outside with tons of graffiti only to be capped off by the vacant lot that has become a dumping ground with weeds that stand over 6 feet. This owner should show some respect for the people that live, work and pass through here to clean up this mess. Parks, take the dang fence down, are you trying to keep people out of the park or in the park? And Metro, Rapid Ride better really be what this location needs.

Sorry, comment time is over.
