Happening now: Westwood (and beyond) community cleanup

The sun’s been making appearances this morning – as it did when we stopped at the Southwest Library about half an hour ago to see the volunteers gathering for the Westwood Neighborhood Council/Friends of Southwest Library community cleanup along 35th SW. They still have supplies for more, so you’re welcome to go check in at the table just north of the library (SW Henderson, east of 35th SW) to pitch in and help, between now and 1 pm. As you can see from the photo, all ages welcome!

We are all done and left before the first bit of showers started. We had 4 full garbage bags from the east side of the street. Wish we had more volunteers show up so that we could have tackled both sides of 35th.

Thank you to the people who showed up. Thanks for organizing it, Donn! Let’s do it again!

I’m always interested in the sources of litter. My casual observations: cigarette butts were by far the most common of the items I found, and those were most dense around the bus stops. Candy wrappers were next most common. The bus stops had the most litter overall. I don’t know whether this is because trash blows out of the bin at the stop, or because it’s an area for which nobody takes responsibility, or because people litter more as they congregate at the bus stop. Another observation: people stuff beer bottles in bushes. Peculiar behavior! Maybe they think the glass will eventually decay?

If we understood the sources of litter more, we might be able to figure out how to reduce it.

It’s shocking how many people still throw trash on the street or sidewalk. It’s really nice that there are still people who care enough about their community to clean it up! Thank you!!!

Sorry I didn’t hear about this sooner–I would have come by. Is there a Westwood email list?
