Just in from the mayor’s office – a city official from Renton is coming to work in Seattle as the successor to Department of Transportation director Grace Crunican, who announced her resignation nine days ago – read on for the announcement:

Mayor Mike McGinn today announced Peter E. Hahn as his appointment for director of the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), pending City Council confirmation.

Hahn, current deputy public works administrator for the city of Renton, served as Snohomish County’s director of public works from 1992 to 2006. In that position, he managed a department that has more than 650 employees and a 2005 budget of $200 million.

SDOT has a workforce of more than 750 employees and a 2010 budget of $310 million.

As director of public works for Snohomish County, Hahn was also responsible for coordination on regional issues with Sound Transit, WSDOT, PSRC, State departments such as Health and Ecology, as well as with other cities, counties, and special districts in the central Puget Sound region.

As deputy public works administrator for the city of Renton since 2006, Hahn has been responsible for managing a program of transportation improvements and plans, including a 68-acre urban village development. He also helped lead efforts to prepare a new trail and bicycle master plan and oversaw Sound Transit facilities, new bus rapid transit services and coordination with WSDOT on I-405 improvements in Renton.

“In Peter we have an excellent manager and someone who understands the future of mobility in Seattle and the region,” said McGinn. “We look forward to working with him.”

Hahn, 65, has lived in Seattle for 29 years. He has a Master in City Planning (Harvard University), a Master in Public Administration (USC), and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (City College of N.Y.). Hahn also completed all the course work in two graduate engineering programs: M.I.T. and UW (Transportation and Construction Management Program).

Hahn will start work on January 19. His salary will be $155,000.

Outgoing SDOT Director Grace Crunican will assist Hahn for a three-week transition period, with Hahn becoming director of SDOT on February 5, pending council confirmation.
