Overnight notes: From Eddie’s endorsement, to eatery for sale

(Twitpic from Monday night’s Pearl Jam concert at KeyArena)
West Seattle Pearl Jam fans (and others from around the city) are talking about the band’s 1st of 2 KeyArena concerts right now – on Facebook, on Twitter, in bars, at home, wherever. Among them, Olivia, who noted on Facebook that PJ leader Eddie Vedder urged the crowd to vote for fellow West Seattleite Dow Constantine for King County Executive. (Dow, of course, has been rocking the vote in various venues, including the Mudhoney intro we video’d at West Seattle Summer Fest.) According to Olivia, EV then quipped that Krist Novoselic (formerly of Nirvana) told him to say that.

2 MORE ROCK NOTES: Jeff Gilbert of the Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) in Morgan Junction says Sunday’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Garage Sale raised $300 for White Center Food Bank. (And they’re working on a Halloween event – stay tuned!) And if you missed Chris Ballew as Caspar Babypants at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market on Sunday — the quick clip we featured in our first Junction Car Show report is topped by the fun clip shared by West Seattleite Edgar Riebe: “Three Blind Mice.”

ARTS NOTE: ArtsWest just launched a new fundraising campaign — 500 @ $50. They’re hoping to get at least 500 people to chip in $50 (or more) each.

HISTORY REVISITED: A month and a half after we covered the city Landmarks Preservation Board voting to give city-landmark status to The Sanctuary at Admiral, the West Seattle-based website Vintage Seattle has just published several historic photos and a drawing contributed by the granddaughter of one of its architects. See them here.

EATERY FOR SALE: It’s a blind listing but you’ll probably have the same guess we did, regarding this CL item about a Junction restaurant “across from California at Edmunds” offered for $300,000. (No, it’s not the shuttered Ama Amathat’s for sale by name at $199K.) We’ve got a message out looking for confirmation. TUESDAY AFTERNOON NOTE: The very first commenter found the listing that confirmed it’s Tom Yum Koong.

Tom Koom or something like that. We have eaten there several times, its not bad, its not great, it is well priced and easy to get in and out of.

Anybody at the Pearl Jam show? Dying to hear how it was.

  • Meghan September 22, 2009 (7:54 am)

It’s actually a pretty good Thai restaurant – not as good as Budda Rukksa, but decent. They’re friendly and the atmosphere is nice. But there’s never anyone in there. I don’t think they’ve done enough marketing. Maybe someone else can make it work. But if Ama Ama is $199,000, there can’t be any way possible this place is worth $300,000 – unless it’s an apples and oranges comparison for some reason.

The wife and I hit the PJ show.

The acoustics at the Key aren’t exactly ideal and they were futzing around with Eddie’s voice levels (first day of the tour… a few bugs) but all in all it was an excellent show. great set list, Mike is still a crazy fool and great to watch play. Matt’s wife came out with some other folks and backed up with some strings. Stone is still a bit predictable stage wise but tore it up. Eddie’s voice is still a beautiful instrument.

    Good times.

It was a great show. I missed the Dow plug but he did give Obama a plug and the need to figure out the health care mess sooner, rather than later.

  • GenHillOne September 22, 2009 (8:41 am)

We used to get take out from here regularly (the Thai “fast food” to Buddha Ruska’s “dining” for us). We’d combine it with a quick pick-up from Petco, but since the demise of the back lot, have maybe done it once. Too bad, nice folks and space.

  • OP September 22, 2009 (9:35 am)

Zip it and sing, Eddie. Few if any pay good money to hear who you endorse for ANY office from ANY party.

  • mark September 22, 2009 (9:47 am)

Nah, if Eddie has the platform use it. I could care less what he or any other celebrity has to say about politics but you know you will get it when you see PJ. Don’t go if it bothers you.

  • Kayleigh September 22, 2009 (11:00 am)

Thanks mark and Brian! Their new album is interesting for sure–I’m downloading it as soon as I can.

“Zip it and sing, Eddie. Few if any pay good money to hear who you endorse for ANY office from ANY party.”

He’s got the mic, not you.

Musicians have been spouting their political beliefs through word or song for years.

    Oh… I get it. You’re a Miley Cyrus fan. I’m sorry.

  • OP September 22, 2009 (2:24 pm)

I paid his ass to sing, not preach about who he endorses. It slowed down the show. If I want to hear preaching, I’ll go to church. If he wants to express political beliefs through song, no problem—fantastic, go for it! But when he, Bono, Stipe, the Dixie Twits, Kayne West, Madonna, Thom Yorke or whoever open their yappers for anything other than singing, well, it’s nice but shut up and play.

    You’re a Miley Cyrus fan. I’m sorry.

And I was listening to PJ, Nirvana and Mudhoney at the indie record store where I worked back when you were still singing along to Barney and learning lyrics to Old McDonald Had a Farm, junior.

Musicians have been spouting their political beliefs through word or song for years.

Yes, and it didn’t work then, and it doesn’t work now. But you agree with him, so you’re not bored. Meh. What a surprise….

  • mark September 22, 2009 (2:41 pm)

It slowed down the show? You obviously were not at the show and you have never been to any other PJ show before. Its what they do. They sing for 2 hours, they talk for 2 minutes. You are full of it OP.

Re: Tom Yum Koong: thanks for finding the official listing, I couldn’t find that early this morning when I wrote this item. That was my guess – TR

Opie, for someone who’s been in the know for as long as you say, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that EV speaks about issues important to him. Been a part of his stage presence, oh, say, forever. I’ve never been to a concert in my life that doesn’t include banter of some form, either between members of the group, or straight to the audience.

    .

Most, if not all of us pay to see our favorite performer in all their aspects. Someone as talented as EV can’t be dismissed as merely a singer.

    .

And that political singing actually worked out quite well. We’re still listening to artists from the 60’s four decades later. Hopefully the same will be true of Eddie.

Really? Wouldn’t rather hear the 2 some odd minutes it takes to play “Spin the Black Circle” vs. him yammering on about Dow Constantine? Sincerely? Doesn’t that get old?

And that political singing actually worked out quite well. We’re still listening to artists from the 60’s four decades later.

Ugh. Define “worked out.” And yes, some of us are, unforntunately.

Back in 1983, when U2 was on their “War” tour, Bono would pull an audience member up on stage, wrap them in a white flag and sit them on a speaker while singing “40.” It was a very cool and inspirational and political gesture. (Back then, he didn’t preach as much as he does now.) You got the message loud and clear.

Why anyone paying good money to see someone stop a show and use the stage as an ideological bully pulpit when a massive majority in the audience already agree with his socio-political beliefs is a headscratcher. Talk about your beliefs on MTV, in Rolling Stone, Spin or wherever, but blah, blah, yadda, yadda, please just play…

Just my two cents. Which everyone else’s opinions are worth, too.

Let me guess. OP you are the kind of guy who complains about how expensive the beers are at a Mariners game. Then you go to the game and complain every time you stand in line. Then, when the game is over, you complain again and again…..in other words, you are nothing but a blowhard who likes to complain.

Nice attempt at trying to create a strawman, but no. Besides, I can afford to drink the beers at the M’s games. I just choose to soak my liver in beer outside and prior to the game.

And I’m sure you happily accept everything and never complain. Or should I mention the names Bush, Cheney, Rossi, Limbaugh, War in Iraq, Halliburton et al. and see if your head explodes in a Tazmanian Devil-like spittle of complaint….

  • mark September 22, 2009 (5:11 pm)

Strawman? nope, just calling it like it is.

  • dawsonct September 22, 2009 (6:55 pm)

Woodie Guthrie, Joe Hill, Pete Seeger and the Weavers, Odetta, Baez, Joni Mitchell, Dylan, Neil Young. A very small sampling of American musicians who had something relevant to sing about. Often they are able to reach audiences who would be otherwise unreachable. Of course, it’s soooo much cooler to be a nihilist or really self centered. Woohoo, Ted Nugent roooolz!

Oops, Joni and Neil are Canucks.

  • mark September 22, 2009 (7:03 pm)

I like Ted, but I am not going to complain when he is going to go off on gun rights (and crossbows). I am smart enough to know what comes with the Cat Scratch Fever.

  • JanS September 22, 2009 (7:09 pm)

    folks, folks..chill a bit…it’s getting personal here…play nice :)

  • grr September 22, 2009 (10:06 pm)

sigh…I eat at Tom Yum often. It’s affordable, and very tasty. Hate to see them go under :(

  • Westie September 22, 2009 (10:40 pm)

Bummer about Tom Yum Koong. Really nice people, great seating and decent food. I don’t even like Thai food, but I like going there just for the ease of the in and out and the fast service. We’ll (wife and I will) miss it for sure. Yeah, maybe more marketing might have been good. Hard to say. Hope someone as pleasant and polite as the crew that worked there replaces them.

  • Leroniusmonkfish September 23, 2009 (5:40 am)

That’s it…no more concerts for me. If lead singers are going to voice their political opinions on me then I may as well just stay at home.

  • Leroniusmonkfish September 23, 2009 (8:40 am)

OP even “paid his as to sing”…

  • Leroniusmonkfish September 23, 2009 (8:45 am)

ASS I meant ASS….I guess the edit feature no longer works on an iPhone?

  • Brian September 23, 2009 (9:07 am)

Sorry OP… No Barney for me. You and I are the same age group… Like when Kim Virant (Lazy Susan) was opening for PJ back in the day.

    Nice try.

Just sit at home and listen to your music. Leave the shows to the folks who want the entire experience. Face it… you are getting old. You probably thought it was too loud too.

  • OP September 23, 2009 (9:38 am)

See, now if I step in and attempt to defend myself here, I’m going to get either a) get my comment deleted or b.) get my comment deleted and banned—which should give you some indication of much I could rip you two a new ones. But frankly, I’m not that interested in those options or in wasting any more bandwidth on two.

  • WSB September 23, 2009 (9:48 am)

STOP it right now. OP had his/her say, those who disagree with him/her had theirs. We do NOT do “you are/no, YOU are/no, YOU are” here, but lots of other places will welcome it. Thanks.

  • Leroniusmonkfish September 23, 2009 (10:00 am)

    Nevermind…I guess I don’t need a “new one”.

Sorry, comment time is over.
