Happening now: A beautiful day – for a car wash, and more

That’s how this sunny Saturday started at Seacrest, as photographed by Christopher Boffoliand it just keeps getting better. At right, a little pic sent by West Seattle High School assistant volleyball coach Jim Hardy, who says they’re washing cars an extra half-hour, till 2:30 pm, and says they’re thankful for everybody supporting Westside volleyball: “This is both a major fundraiser for the program to help offset some budget reductions from the School District, and part of a Team Building weekend. Supporters are asked to make donations. It is going to be an exciting year for the team which features some good young players who should continue to improve through the season.” They’re in the WSHS parking lot. Meantime, remember everything going on today is in the West Seattle Weekend Lineup (to jump directly to the Saturday section, click here – and if you know of something NOT on the list, please add a mention in comments!).

The “Marination” Food Truck is parked at 35th and Graham until 2, across from the coin-operated car wash. Still haven’t tried them, but they have a decent rep.

Thanks. They’re in the Weekend Lineup each week – it’s been two months now – but I also have a street food note going up next and will re-mention!!! TR

Nobody ever comments about it, but everytime I pass one of these “fundraising car washes”, I think of how they are harming the environment.

Seattle Public Utilities advises AGAINST washing cars in driveways.

    From their link http://www.seattle.gov/UTIL/Services/Drainage_&_Sewer/Keep_Water_Safe_&_Clean/ENVIRONMEN_200311261725464.asp:

When a car is washed on a paved surface, like in a driveway or in a parking lot, the soap, detergent, automotive fluids, oil, and roadway dirt that gets rinsed from the vehicle goes straight into nearby storm drains. These storm drains lead directly to lakes, streams, and bodies of water in the Puget Sound area. This contaminated runoff, even runoff containing biodegradable soap, can cause significant harm to aquatic plant life, fish, and other animals. In short, something as seemingly harmless as a car wash can cause serious damage to local water quality.

Actually, yes, it’s been commented on it prolifically here on WSB before and there ARE “fish-friendly car wash kits” that are loaned out to nonprofits. WSHS volleyball will have to speak for itself but the notice for example that we have posted for a car wash in the same spot next week, WSHS Grad Nite fundraiser next Saturday, specifically mentions it. And the kit is available free at Camp Long here in West Seattle – scroll down on this page (there’s no permalink to the item itself, unfortunately)
