West Seattle Crime Watch: Home shot at; giant-tire theft; more

Topping this afternoon’s West Seattle Crime Watch roundup – police confirm that a house at 17th/Barton [map] was shot at, describing it as “random vandalism,” not a case of someone being targeted. We got a text about shots heard in that area early yesterday but had no confirmation until we checked with police following a note from Adrienne, who says her neighbor’s townhome was shot at. Police say no one was hurt. Ahead, several more reports, starting with the case of the huge, now-missing tire:

First: Since our last Crime Watch roundup yesterday, the reports we’ve received include a few in which the stolen items seemed puzzling to those reporting the crimes, starting with Alan‘s note via Facebook reporting that a 300-pound tire was stolen from outside CrossFit West Seattle (42nd/Admiral) overnight. We subsequently received e-mail directly from CF’s owner Eric:

Between the hours of 8:30pm last night and 5:30am this morning, our tractor tire was stolen from the front of our business on the corner of SW Admiral Way and 42 Ave SW. The tire is about 5 feet tall and weighs 300+ lbs. I’m sure someone thought it would be funny to roll our tire away as a prank, so I’m guessing we will find it close by as it is too heavy to lift, unless there was a group of several people. We use this tire during our workouts and need it ASAP. Please send out a request to your readers asking them to help locate the tire. We will pick it up from wherever it is found.

Diane reports a smaller but also-puzzling theft:

A weird occurrence last Wed night sometime between midnight and 7AM or so. Someone took 2 plastic chairs from my front deck and 2 from my neighbor’s. We live in the Alaska Junction area on a hillside-so someone had to walk up a bunch of stairs for not very obvious “inexpensive chairs”. While not a real monetary loss, it was very annoying. Anyone know anything about this or had it happen to them?

And yet another small-but-puzzling theft, reported by a West Seattleite who wants to be anonymous:

Within a 1.5 hour timeframe, 6pm-7:30pm, on Wednesday evening, (in a) house at North end of 56th Ave SW, very close to Alki Beach – Someone walked at least 30ft from the alley into the backyard patio and removed the front tire from a mountain bike. The bike is tough to see from the alley, and there were some other items in the area that were not taken…probably because they were bulky/heavy.

Kind of worrisome that someone would be that bold during daylight hours. Not sure if they were specifically looking for a bike tire, or if they were just casing yards to see what was easily accessible. The bike is a cheap one, and the tire was very basic.

Now one burglary reported by two of the victim’s neighbors; first, from Elisabeth:

I want to report on a house robbery (Wednesday). The house is next door to mine on 40th SW off Dakota [map]. The owner, who just left after coming to tell me about it, said anything of possible value was taken, including electronics, medications, perfume, apparel, a bicycle, and a jar of loose change. It happened sometime before 4:30 p.m. Of course the police were called.

Gary also reported the break-in, saying there was “no sign of forced entry” and advising people to “just be alert.” One other Crime Watch note: Erin posted today in the WSB Forums, looking for witnesses to what she says was a hit-run crash a month ago.

The home burglary on 40th/Dakota really concerns me. I would not be surprised if it is connected to the magazine salesmen. They were in this area only a few days ago casing that exact area. Two males, one Caucasian, 6’1, shaved head with a 1/2 of dark hair, tattoo on forearm, slender/athletic build. The other was a tall African American, slender build..only saw him from a distance. These guys were cutting through yards and working as a team. Just a thought…

does anyone know if home alarm systems really work? We have one at work, and I am wanting to put one in my house too. Just wondering before I spend the 40.00 a month.

    Coffee:

Alarm systems are a deterrent. If nothing else the alarm sounding may shorten the time criminals spend in your home robbing you. At best, the police show up in time to stop a crime in progress (highly unlikely, though)

Along with this, people should shore up window and door locks and invest in a good safe for your valuables or family heirlooms. Dead-bolt door locks that require a key both INSIDE and outside are a good idea too. Be sure to always lock doors even when you are home and lock EVERYTHING when you are away from home.

Block watch and a general heightened level of awareness are something else to work on. Call the police if you see any suspicious behavior in your area. Don’t assume it’s nothing to worry about.

A deck chair from our house was also stolen. They left the other three chairs, table and the umbrella alone. I wonder if the chairs stolen from other houses match ours and the burglars were building a set… We live on 42nd near the Alaska Junction.

My ex’s rental house was broken into this afternoon – around 40th and Hinds. Side door which is visible from the neighbors across the street was kicked in and it was a heavy bolted door. The neighbors saw someone hanging out in front of the house and then later on saw someone walk in the side door. It took some effort to kick the door in – surprised that no one heard or saw him do it. It is a great neighborhood or are there any great neighborhoods left in West Seattle? Luckily noone was home but they got jewerly and electronics.

Too many doors getting kicked in or axed or bludgeoned! Sorry for everyone who has been a victim.

Rather than get a security system (not yet, anyway; knock on wood), I have invested in high-quality, insulated steel exterior doors with high-quality deadbolts and doorsets. They are fashionable, are paneled with windows and are
paintable (I went for red:)). Anyway, they are some sense of security for me. I’m sure there are many local distributors and dealers around, but I happenned to get mine through Northwest Window & Door.

    Good luck everyone!

I actually live in the townhome complex that got shot at. It broke some windows out and the siding is sprayed with shot. Pretty scary stuff…

The best deterrent is a large, barking dog. I have one of those and two small yippy dogs and they help alert the big dog to any real (and non real) threats.

Sorry, comment time is over.
