West Seattle Crime Watch: 1 car gone, 1 car hit

Two West Seattle Crime Watch reports to share this morning, both involving cars – one stolen, one hit-and-run – read on:

First, from Sue:

On Sunday afternoon, August 9, our 2000 medium blue Chevy Astro Van was stolen at 9200 block of 44th Ave. SW (east of Endolyne Joe’s Restaurant) while we were posting a free sign for our garage sale. Beware, don’t post signs while your car is running with the keys. It only took a few seconds for my husband to post, 25 feet away and someone hopped in and drove off. If you see a van meeting this description, license plate 495 X-C, we’d appreciate an email or call the police.

After Sue’s initial note, she sent this addendum:

Also when we called the insurance company to report our vehicle stolen, he told us how people are having their cars stolen at gas stations. He said when someone goes to hang the pump up, after they’ve filled their tank, thieves hop in the car and drive off. They’ve had several incidents.

Next, a photo and report from Dan, who points out that the license-plate number of the hit-and-run driver is partly readable from the imprint the vehicle left:

I’d like to report yet another hit and run on SW Andover St between 44th and 45th [map]. It occurred this past Friday night around 8pm at almost the same exact location as a previous hit and run that my neighbor Ryan reported on June 13th when his car was sideswiped. [previous report]

This time, the individual (I don’t even want to give them credit that we belong to the same species) was driving eastbound on Andover when they hit my girlfriend’s car straight on. My neighbor Ryan heard something and ran outside to take a look and saw a gray Pontiac (or similar) car driving away. He immediately came up to my house and knocked on my door to let us know what happened. Thank goodness he heard something and I am sure that I owe him a beer or two. Fortunately, my girlfriend’s car is fully drivable and we were able to file a police report fairly quickly.

One bonus piece of information that the driver who committed the crime didn’t realize was that they left a nice imprint of their license plate on my girlfriend’s front bumper. We took plenty of pictures and notified the police and the insurance company with this information. As you can see, the license number appears to be (857–H). So if you see this license plate around, please feel to let the authorities know. Perhaps it may be necessary to investigate putting up a toll booth on Andover since it seems like it is a great place to speed.

    857-WKH to my eyes.

Looks like there’s enough there to get a full plate. The plate is definitely 857-?KH, and almost certainly 857-MKH.

Sorry to hear this has happened to my neighbors, yet again! WTF is up!?

I always remove my keys from the ignition when I’m filling my car with gas. I think it stems from the one time I habitually locked my door after the tank was filled up and proceeded to lock myself out of my car. Thankfully my window was cracked enough to unlock the door myself. I guess removing my keys was a good habit to form since cars are now being stolen that way.

I’m so glad the license plate shows up on the car! Hopefully they will be caught and then we can file this under “stupid criminals in our midst.” Still, I’m sorry that both of these incidents happened. My husband parks his truck on a side street that’s right off 35th, so I see people come around that corner like they are Jeff Gordon several times a day, and we’re just waiting for the dent…

if they don’t bust this person with this clear imprint of the license plate I will lose all faith in our system. keep us posted.

What kind of impact do you have to have to make an indent of a plate like that?!
BTW, I’m not the Sue who had her car taken.

Pretty sure it’s 857_MKH…Took the picture into Photoshop and inverted the colors..outlines popped out a little more.

—and..for our Mac friends….If you hold down the Control-Option-Command keys all at the same time (Three Finger Power Claw) and hit the ‘8’ key, you can invert the colors on your screen :)

I agree with Holden — 857-WKH. The first letter is tapered at the bottom.

  • CandrewB August 12, 2009 (12:02 pm)

They won’t bust the driver since the police won’t have enough evidence for a criminal case. However, the victim’s insurance company will go after them in civil court and win.

44th Ave has become a speedway, folks leave california to avoid the traffic and lights and just zoom down the street…44th between andover and charlestown has lots of young kids and a special needs kid as well..years ago we asked for speed bumps or some police presence to monitor the high level of speeding and at the time the speeding wasn’t as bad as it is now…just a matter of time till someone is hurt…

My first thought was to play in Photoshop as well, and I’d agree with 857-WKH.

So, CandrewB, you’re saying with a direct imprint of a license plate, they don’t have enough evidence that their car smashed into another car?

  • Sue August 12, 2009 (3:05 pm)

Ian, they could always argue that the other car backed into theirs, making the imprint, and the other issue is that you can’t prove who was driving it. So while the car might’be been involved in the accident, I would think you can’t blame a driver or owner without a witness.

All the letters are tapered at the bottom. It’s the perspective of the photo. So I’d look for both an M and a W there (probably an M, as a W would be MORE tapered).

As far as the generic “XXX street seems like a great place to speed” that gets tacked on to every traffic issue: at this point it’s still amusing, but WSB should maybe start editing before it begins to get annoying.

  • Michael August 12, 2009 (3:14 pm)

Oh, and Sue, under the law the owner certainly CAN be held liable for crimes committed in their car – unless they report it stolen.
    .
The “they backed into me” argument might SOUND like something usable, but I think you’ll find a great number of judges would be laughing as they render their “guilty” verdict.

  • CandrewB August 12, 2009 (3:47 pm)

I am saying the police would not have enough evidence to charge the driver with anything since they did not catch them in the act and there were no witnesses at the scene. A minor property crime is not worth it to them to call in CSI. However, it is worth it to the insurance company to sue and circumstantial evidence is enough for a civil verdict.

  • Carole August 12, 2009 (9:08 pm)

Well, the they backed into me argument wouldn’t hold much water if the alleged “backees” didn’t call to report to their own insurance! I htink it’s pretty safe to assume these folks probably didn’t even have insurance.

Sorry, comment time is over.
