Homecoming day: USS John C. Stennis, seen from West Seattle

As previewed earlier this week, the carrier USS John C. Stennis returned to Bremerton this morning after a six-month deployment. Gary Jones shares the view from West Seattle shores, in the pink light of very-early morning. He writes, “Ahoy and welcome home, USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74).”

At first I didn’t notice, but on second glance I see those little white dots on the deck are sailors! Right?

Yes. Always quite a sight as they pull in to port with sailors lining the top deck – TR

Great shot. I can’t place where it was taken from though. Any idea?

Almost exactly what my son and I saw from Gatewood hill around 6:30. He really enjoyed it, and I thank the WSB for the heads-up yesterday.

Looks like it is looking west just north of Blake Island, and south of Blakely Rock and the south end of Bainbridge Island heading into Bremerton.

I had the privelege, and thrill, of “Manning the Rail”, on my brother’s Destroyer Tender, on which I had been on a week long “Tiger Cruise”, 16 years ago (to the day, I believe).

    .

His ship had been on a six-month WESPAC deployment to the Persian Gulf, and participants in the Tiger Cruise got to ride the last leg, from Pearl Harbor, to the ship’s Home Port of San Diego.

    .

The entire experience was the thrill of a lifetime, and seeing all the sailors meet up with their spouses and families was awesome! There was a tremendous vibe aboard the ship as we pulled in and docked.

    .

My brother was set to retire a few months later, and did, so I knew this was literally a once in a lifetime thing. I remember thinking, seriously at the time, that I needed to buddy up with someone else on the ship, to be able to go on a future cruise! ;)

    .
