Followup to our recent report that new banners had been designed to replace the undeniably worn ones hanging around The Junction – the new ones are now up along 42nd and 44th (the latter is where we took the photo above).

What is “Downtown” West Seattle? Downtown is … downtown, not West Seattle. Even growing up on the Eastside I’d never have said downtown was anything but downtown Seattle. I’m not liking those banners, kind of look like they are signs for a salami stand.
Mike…yeah..that’s the first thing I thought when I saw the first picture…but…maybe they’ll grow on us :)
They look ok by me. I never think of West Seattle as downtown either………..but it’s not a biggy!!!! The colors are bright and cheery.
They are a great addition. A fresh look. The Junction is really showing itself to be the heart of West Seatle!!
I think I’ve been on Facebook too much today; I saw this and looked for the “Like” button…
We don’t have a “like” button but Share This below every WSB story does allow you to share it via Facebook, e-mail, Twitter, a whole variety of “social” options … TR
They look great! The design is a nice blending of contemporary and traditional design elements. The colors are refreshing. They really give
The Junction a nice identity.
I think they look great. I proudly live in the Junction neighborhood and love the downtown angle. Salami naysayers – STOP KNIT PICKING. Have you actually seen the banners or are you judging merely on these really bad photos (sorry WSB)?
I’m glad they got new signs, but they make me think “fast food.” maybe it’s the choice of colors and the simplicity, I don’t know.
I think they are a fun addition to West Seattle and am glad to have them!
What was wrong with “where Alaska meets California”? Try to brand WS as “downtown” is not a good idea. Sounds like the Chamber and the Junction Association have created the opportunity to have to explain that we are not downtown Seattle but the other downtown, West Seattle. Now if the Chamber and the Junction Association would look up at the American flags that some of their businesses display they should require those businesses to replace the tattered and torn flags, today!
More signs are going up today although I can’t guarantee I will meet Leroy’s standards of photographic excellence – not sure what would constitute a “good” photo of a banner hanging from a pole if these are “bad” but OTOH we include photos for informational purposes, not art – TR
Seems like using the ‘downtown’ moniker is fine, as long as ‘west seattle’ comes directly after it. “downtown west seattle” seems fine. Just like saying “downtown Bellevue” or “downtown Kirkland”.
It used to confuse me that “the junction” meant Alaska/Cal…since it seems there are other junctions also (morgan junction, admiral junction).
This is the “True” Junction. The name comes from a historical reference. The intersection of California and Alaska is where the East-West and North-South trolley cars met. The turntable for the East-West trolley was actually in the center of our current intersection. Ever wonder why Alaska street jogs at the intersection? This is why – Alaska originally stopped at California.
Sorry, comment time is over.
