West Seattle scenes: Sunset glow; students’ gift to a tribe

Thanks to David Hutchinson for that sunset view from Don Armeni. Next, thanks to Eric Baer for gathering and sending photos from the Pathfinder K-8 “Rethinking Thanksgiving” event last night, a potluck attended by more than 200 members of the school community, and their invited guests, members of the Duwamish Tribe, welcomed with the kindergarten classes’ “famous tree dance and song”:

Teachers of the 2nd and 3rd grades gifted a button blanket to the Duwamish — whose longtime elected chair, the Honorable Cecile Hansen, is at right — for their new longhouse in West Seattle (which is to be dedicated soon). Each classroom has a clan animal represented on the blanket – Spider, Frog, and Owl:

Third from the right is the fabulous Roger Hernandez, guest artist and Native American storyteller, and a member of Pathfinder’s community. If anyone has a chance to listen to Roger’s stories they are an extraordinary gift. Roger has been sharing his time and wisdom with the Pathfinder community for years.

Many times I’ve been reminded by a thoughtful child in an unexpectedly wise voice in the midst of chaos and frustration relating one of the lessons learned with direct quotes from a story. Perhaps not readily appreciating the timing but stunned and grateful for the lessons learned.

Thank you Roger and thank you Duwamish members and other guests last evening. We are richer for it.

Thank you WSB for posting these pics and to Eric for sending them in. It is easy during this divisive time with school clusures looming to not still celebrate amazing programming in schools. This event is just one of the htings that make Pathfinder a really unique and enriching place for kids to grow up.
