Eight nights after an election in which most of their endorsed candidates/positions emerged victorious, the 34th District Democrats gathered tonight at The Hall at Fauntleroy, in a celebratory mood but not at all ready to rest on their laurels – here’s our report:

Despite the rain, there was a huge turnout at the first post-election 34th District Democrats meeting. With many reasons to celebrate, the tone at this meeting was both proud and thankful.

The 34th DDs’ chair, Ivan Weiss, started things off by expressing how proud he is and noting that the 34th District had more participating members than any other district in Seattle and raised the most money. “We have a lot to celebrate,” he cheered – not the least of which is the fact it was disclosed tonight that district voter turnout is believed to have been around 78%.

Vice chair Tim Nuse said that it was because of help from 34th DDs that the White Center Food Bank could be open for extra hours recently to meet demands, but now more than ever, he continued, the food bank needs help: Last month almost 1700 families sought food through WCFB, and that number is expected to rise with the holidays looming. The food bank is putting out a call for volunteers to work the day before Thanksgiving, and they are in desperate need of donations. There will also be a food drive at the next 34th DDs meeting December 10.

Mostly, this meeting gave members a chance to say thanks and share stories from working the polls on election day. While most everyone agreed that the work has just begun, the 34th DDs will be starting by reorganizing leadership and filling needed positions. Weiss also said, “We have to make the Democratic Party relevant to people in our communities.” And, alluding to the re-election of Governor Chris Gregoire over the same opponent as 2004, a field organizer said tonight, “Hopefully we never have to hear from Dino Rossi ever again.”

Also from the 34th DDs’ website, upcoming events – including the West Seattle Democratic Women lunch meeting next week, 11:15 am Nov. 20 at West Seattle Golf Course; convention “superdelegate” Sharon Mast will discuss her experiences. Lunch is $10; to make a reservation, e-mail wsdwomen@yahoo.com or call (206) 935-3216.
