Another Car-Free Day alert: Flyer with a few more fine points

We mentioned earlier that the city is also leafletting cars as an extra way of getting out the word about Car-Free Day on Alki SW this Sunday (parking restrictions 10 am-6 pm, driving restrictions noon-6 pm). Looking at the leaflet forwarded by SDOT’s Rick Sheridan, we see a few additional details: The parking restrictions are now listed as SW Maryland (map) to 63rd SW – different from the traffic closure, which is supposed to start at California Way (map); the bus lane is described as being for the 56 as well as the Water Taxi shuttle (route 773). You can see the flyer here.

So I get that on Car Free Day, Alki will be free from cars. But… is that it? Is there more? Will the void where the cars were be filled with something else? Other than a paucity of vehicular traffic, I’m a little confused about what is actually happening with this event.

While a applaud the spirit of the car free day along Alki, where are all the residents who live along Alki with no parking at their apartments or homes suppose to park?

Essentially, this is an event to give those who can afford to live on Alki and park indoors a day where they aren’t bothered by cars driving down the street or all of the people that don’t live there running around enjoying the beach, since they have no way to get there other an by bus, or parking on the streets around the car-free zone. (say what you will, I’m not going to sit on someone else’s pee and deal with a 45 minute each-way two change route, just to get a great burger and walk on the beach Sunday…)

    Brilliant.

Indeed, how are folks suppose to get to the Alki? I’m sure the businesses along the beach are not thrilled and just to add…how are those who actually live on Alik and have indoor parking suppose to get out of their conods and homes durng this time? This just seems like a major headache for residents who live in the neighborhood.

so…how are those who actually live on Alki and have indoor parking/driveways suppose to get out of their homes during this time? This just sounds like a MAJOR headache for all who live along and around Alki, I’m sorry but I would like to see the Mayor focusing on other issues.

As though we had any real bus service along Alki anyhow on weekends… let alone commuter service only during the week…

I did find a link to a “detour” route on the Seattle Transportation Dept web page, showing one lane car traffic allowed Eastbound … go down Admiral, R on 63rd?? maybe… and R on Alki back to California Way area .. so you can loop around … maybe…
http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/docs/carfreeAlkidetour.pdf sorry thought I could post a link but seems to be plain text only …
This is a royal pain in the keester… our old apt building has only half the number of parking spaces for the number of people here… those w/o will be subject to towing in their own neighborhood because of mayor jowly’s green overkill … poor planning if you ask me .. sorry… sour grapes on this one!!!

Sorry, comment time is over.
