High Point Youth Blessing Ceremony under way now

As mentioned in our preceding post, this community event is happening right now — prayers and hopes for a safe summer. We stopped by toward the start of it for the clip you see above. If you are not stuck in, oh, say, an office outside West Seattle, it is a spectacular day and High Point Pond Park (30th/Juneau; map) is in an amazingly panoramic spot. “Food, games, music, and fun” are promised too.

Can anyone explain just what this is? and more importantly why?

Is it religious? Is it new age? WTF?

There is an artistic flyer with no info whatsoever and photos with no explanation.

It sounds like Cambodian and those look like Buddhist robes…

If it is Khmer Association related perhaps someone should just say so.

Khmer Associations in the US are primarily Buddhist and cultural, but some are associated with Korean style dominionist cell churches. The local association appears to be Buddhist and has a good reputation in the neighborhood, but plopping an ambiguous to incomprehensible video on a web page with little information seems pointless.

If you click the clip the shot is as close as we could get – we had to shoot from the back edge of that metal decking area on the northeast side of the pond – and you can read the banner, New High Point Khmer Association. The minutes from this month’s HPNA meeting (which we could not cover ourselves because of several other events happening that night) explain (this is a cut-and-paste excerpt, which we usually avoid for copyright reasons but since it’s minutes of a meeting I hope they won’t mind): “Saray Thach spoke for Mr. Yon Noy about the June 27th Youth Blessing Ceremony at the pond. Prior to 2007, each year for seven years, a High Point youth died during the summer. In 2007, Mr. Noy organized the first Youth Blessing, bringing together High Point youth of all religions and ethnic backgrounds. 2007 was the first year that no HP youth lives were lost. Another event is planned for June 27th, organized by Mr. Noy and Andrew Mead.” Sorry if it seemed pointless, but our point was simply to say “this is happening now, and will be going on for a while if you want to go check it out for yourself” as an update since we had mentioned this event several times previously.

Sorry, comment time is over.
