Followup: Alki-neighborhood parking signs going up today

In the Alki neighborhood along and around Stevens near 59th, SDOT crews are out today putting up the parking-restriction signs we first told you about three weeks ago. These aren’t new restrictions, but rather official demarcation of the existing rules regarding parking within a certain distance of intersections, driveways, etc. (On a slightly related note, we’ll take this occasion to remind you that the neighborhood meeting about the 59th/Stevens development is a week from Thursday; previous WSB coverage here.)

Sadly, signs are needed but people don’t read signs or ignore them most of the time. A lot of dangerous situations are created when people create parking spots and/or are ignorant of the law or common sense or both. The “oh I forgot” excuse .. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen cars blocking driveways, parked closer than 30 feet from a stop sign, blocking a corner/ sidewalk location, parked on the wrong side of the street, parked for more than 72 hours, etc, etc, etc. The city could rake in $$$ if they just ticketed people and maybe people would learn something. Have a law and not enforcing it just reinforces bad behavior.

Not as far as I know. The signs going up in the Alki area are from people parking their cars too close to alleys, causing multi-point turns to get out of the alley onto the street, and too close to intersections so that it was quite unsafe to cross these intersections due to lack of visibility.

My favorite signs are the ones that say “Do not block intersection.” It amazes me that they had to be put up in the first place.. I can see it now, someone went to court and probably won because “your honor there wasn’t a sign saying I could not block the intersection”. There doesn’t seem to be much reason or accountability these days. A lot of selfish attitudes that result in signs being put up to help keep people accountable and reasonable. I’ll never understand how people can be so oblivious to the results of their actions.
A long time ago, Jan and I were talking about signs and she said, “Signs? People read signs!?” LOL. Best of luck to you Jan.

Unfortunately, they seem to be assuming that people know where “South” and “West” are on the map. Lots of luck.

Am very happy to see these, now they need to be enforced (and for private driveways, too).

It’s dangerous backing out, and having to go almost to the center lane to see if you can get across or turn, all worse as a pedestrian.

    Two things…

Streets like 60th ave SW need to be one way if they are going to allow parking on both sides of the street (which they need to continue to do).

They need to create a resident only parking area… it’s getting way to dense down there.

LOL Willow. “I feel your pain” carraig.

Buddy – I agree, but try and get a “Resident only” parking area.

“Dense” – you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

Sorry, comment time is over.
