Basic Green Box move update: New location announced

When we first told you 2 months ago about Basic Green Box moving out of its California SW storefront (right next to this project), Charlotte at BGB didn’t know yet where they would land. Now she’s just sent WSB the official announcement – they’re leaving WS:

After 3 years in our lovely West Seattle community, we are moving to a more accessible location with more parking (you talked, we listened!).

We are so thrilled to join forces with our friends at Year of the Monkey at 2915 1st Ave S (SODO) integrating our accessories with their impressive selection of antique and reproduction furniture.

Last days: We are only open Friday-Sunday for two more weekends (March 28, 29, 30) and April 4, 5, 6 (12 pm-5 pm each day). Hurry in for up to 50% off everything (we won’t move it all!) Our accessories will still be available at www.basicgreenbox.com and we hope to see you in our new location in May. Thank you for your continued support!

That’s too bad. FYI-A friend of mine who talks to the person that runs Murphy’s next to Luna Park cafe said that she too might also be leaving due to a high rent increase. I think all of our cool stores might be moving.

Thanks – we reported the Murphy’s move in January, a few days after our first report on the BGB move.

I’m checking back with Marilyn re: whether they’ve found a new location yet.

Yup, I read that about Murphy’s (and heard it before –I didn’t know about WSB so I didn’t give ’em the scoop) :-) Apparently the flood was the last straw…she had to move all that stuff to higher ground by hand.

Does anyone know if the rents in SODO are actually lower now than the rents in WS (for businesses)? That just seems so unlikely to me.

Gregor’s Books, a main reason we moved here, was driven out by a rent increase too, and it took a year for a new tenant (Green Box) to move in. Wonder how long it will be vacant this time???

And with all of this new development, where do they think the new business will come from? Like I said earlier, us small businesses cannot afford these rents. And we know floods, we were flooded 2 weeks after we moved into our space, and it almost put us out of business. Its the end of March and we are still playing catch up with our vendors.

I don’t recall seeing it here before, but Herban Feast Catering is also moving to SoDo soon (taking the Herban pottery store over). We live above Murphy’s and Marilyn was hoping to move by April 1st, but I’m assuming that plan’s out the window now, since I haven’t seen any change. We’ll miss them when they move; I just hope our fears about Ola Salon expanding into that space don’t come true. Their clientele is snooty (for no good reason – it’s not a high-end salon) and park wherever they feel like it, including the very limited parking reserved for the two apartments in our small building. And they complain about noise “disrupting their spa clients” in the middle of the day on weekends… not our fault they chose to place their massage rooms below residential units (and we’re not loud at all… they’ve complained about the sound of footsteps up our stairs!)

Sorry, comment time is over.
