Meet your new State House Representative

Within the past hour, the King County Council confirmed Sharon Nelson a short time ago as State House Representative for the 34th District (West Seattle/Vashon Island). Rep. Nelson was appointed to the seat left open when Joe McDermott was confirmed as State Senator, succeeding Erik Poulsen, who resigned for a job in the private sector. Congratulations, Rep. Nelson! Congratulations to Sharon Nelson, and lucky for us. For the first time in a LONG time, the 34th will have a vigorous, capable representative who will bring fresh insight to Olympia. It’s truly wonderful that Vashon has representation — cannot imagine how many decades it has been since that occured.

Sharon is likely to be substantially more active than our other 34th LD seat warmers, and her experience in local government is an asset.

Hear hear! Hoorah for Sharon Nelson!

    Alki Dragonfly:

Seat warmers? Are you nuts? Eileen Cody is the Chair of the House Health Care Committee. Erik Poulsen was the Senate Chair of Water, Energy, and Telecommunications, and one of the architects of the major water package passed in the last session. Joe McDermott has been a leader in K-12 education issues and in the battle for civil rights.

And as for when Vashon last had representation in Olympia, it’s not “decades.” Vashon was represented by Peter von Reichbauer before it was redistricted into the 34th after the 1990 Census.

We’re fortunate to have Sharon, and yes, she’ll be terrific, but she is joining a pretty strong delegation.

Sorry, comment time is over.
