Dow vs. Erik?

Now our County Councilguy Dow and his fellow KCC Dems suggest we vote on the Sonics tax plan (the one co-sponsored in the Legislature by our state senator). Er, didn’t some of us already kinda vote on that sort of thing? How about we just have a daily vote on something or another so we can get all these votes out of the way more quickly?

“I’m not sure what their motive is,” said Prentice, D-Renton. “Why have a public vote on a tax the people are already paying, and paying quite willingly?”

…well, we kinda voted against those too — didn’t we? And do we really pay any tax “willingly”? I think a lot of folks out there pay them so they don’t get hefty fines and/or jail time.

You may have felt that way when you voted against Safeco. Unfortunately, you were not making an up or down vote on the Stadium or any general funding mechanism. You were voting on a very specific tax package.

Olympia stood up like leaders after the vote and implemented something completely different. Personally – as much as I hate taxes – I think our leaders should not spend money taking what are essntially opinion polls. They need to make the hard decisions we elected them to make. The voters will let them know if they approve or not come time for re-election.

It’s been 7 years. Get over it!

Ha Ha – agree with your there for sure!!

Initiative 91 wasn’t a general vote to have the Sonics leave town, it merely stated that the city of Seattle has to make a little bit of money on any funding/leasing of public facilities to sports teams. The current Sonics tax scheme would impose taxes County-wide to create a subsidized arena. If, as Sen. Prentice believes, having a third sports team is a wonderful boon for county residents, why wouldn’t county residents vote to tax themselves? If King County voters want to subsidize Ray Allen’s multi-million-dollar salary by paying extra sales taxes, cheers to them.

Actually, what the letter said is that they wouldn’t approve a tax without a public vote. The Sonics don’t want a public vote because they know it will likely lose. This was more of a message to the legislature.

Politicians: if you’re going to put your email address out there for people to contact you with, then monitor the inbox and respond or atleast ensure the flunkies you hire, do it. Remember, voters get you elected. You slack on my email, I slack on voting for you and I know I am not alone.

Sorry, comment time is over.
