JimmyGMemberIf naive teens are being duped into military service then where are the parents in this? If you’re under 18 don’t you need a parents signature to join? Like so much in our world it’s up to parents to have a conversation with their kids on a wide range of topics–from sex to drugs to predatory military recruiters.
Personal responsibility needs to be paramount. Don’t complain if your child got lied to by a recruiter if said child needed your signature to join.
As to any 18 yr olds (they are adults at 18) who joined and then found out they didn’t get the MOS they were promised that’s been going on for yonks.
I personally have relatives and close friends who are either currently serving in Iraq & Afghanistan or have done a tour or 2. While it was a hardship for them to be away from loved ones and to be in a war zone, none of them claims to have been duped into signing on.

JoBParticipantJimmyG…
So.. it’s ok to lie to impressionable young people with limited options to get them to sign up?
is this one of those ends justify the means arguments?
my nephew doesn’t complain that he was duped. He is serving.. honorably. and without complaint.
but he does tell any of this family and friends who are thinking about service that they shouldn’t believe a word that a recruiter tells them about what they will be doing.
I would bet that your family and friends would have signed up if the recruiter had been honest with them. i know my nephew would have.
and aren’t those the troops we really want serving our country?

JimmyGMemberI’m not saying it is right by any means, it’s just well known that recruiters have lied for years about what job you’ll get once you’re done with basic, that the military will be one big happy family, and on and on.
At age 17 I was as naive as they come. I spoke with both Army and Navy recruiters while still in high school. I could see there was no way the military would be as rosy as portrayed.
Out of college I gave myself 6 months to get a job or I was going to join the Army. So I again spoke with recruiters. They really laid it on thick then–me with a 4 year degree–I was promised I could write my own ticket.
I just don’t buy the whole “woe is me, I was duped and lied to” story since anyone with even the lowest IQ can do a cursory look-see into the military and see it’s not all they try to sell you about “An Army of One”.
If there is ANYONE, smart or stupid that today signs on and doesn’t think they won’t see action?
Puhleeze…
And as to the military hitting up those with no other prospects in life. We all make decisions, sometimes they aren’t the most palatable and sometimes they’re painful in the long run, but again, take personal responsibility for the choice you make and don’t cry victim.

JoBParticipantI don’t think those people are crying victim jimmy g.
and i personally think the military is a viable option for many.. it seems to have done some real good for my nephew in ways none of us anticipated.
I come from a family that values service.. and had i been a male in the late 60s… right or wrong.. i probably would have volunteered. My first love did. Unfortunately, he did not make it back to marry me.
i come from one of those idealistic families… i love my country.. even when i believe it to be wrong … as i would bet you do.
i just believe we should make it an honest option.. and that recruitment shouldn’t be part of a teen appreciation day at our local community center unless it is part of the acknowledged activities.

SomeGuyParticipantHey, anyone here have any issue with reinstating the draft?
April 4, 2008 at 10:30 pm #620694
charlabobParticipantNope, absolutely not. As long as everyone is equally susceptible, it’s the only fair thing to do. As it is we have a backdoor draft, that closely resembles the Hotel California. Once you go in, they just keep extending your time.

JeraldParticipantGoing back to the original post, I was wondering who actually sponsored this event and if there were other organizations represented. Was it all military-related? Were local colleges there?
Just trying to get an impression of the event, to satisfy my own curiosity.

JoBParticipantJerald…
great question i didn’t think to ask…
i just accepted the post on it’s face value… that the recruiting was out of character for the event.
thanks for puling us all back to our senses…
tho it has sparked some pretty interesting conversation.

FreeRangeAuthorParticipantRegarding any military DRAFT …
_______________________
Amendment XIII
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

How is a military DRAFT not “involuntary servitude”? And don’t tell me a DRAFT is legal because the courts have upheld it – the American courts also upheld black slavery. Corrupt courts are no defense to violations of the U.S. Constitution.
Anyone remember the “draft riots” of the Civil War?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft_riots
Now that would be a “Battle in Seattle” …

WSBKeymasterFYI I did finally finally get a response from the parks department on this. Planning a post about it tomorrow. Short version, it wasn’t actual recruiting.

AnonymousInactiveWow. So the Military isn’t the big, bad, evil monster, preying on young children, that everyone is so quick to make them out to be. I’m intrigued and looking forward to the full story.

JoBParticipantNew Resident…
don’t jump too fast…
she said it wasn’t actual recruiting…
that could mean they just didn’t have a sign up booth on the premises..
