Siblings are encouraged to attend, although our meeting room is too small for very many energetic preschoolers. We strive to inclusively meet the needs of all mothers, wherever they are in their breastfeeding journey, whether pregnant, exclusively breastfeeding, human milk feeding, adoptive breastfeeding, supplementing, or weaning. “Notes From the Job Search” is about helping people find new jobs. In the years we’ve been meeting at C&P Coffee we have laughed a great deal, we have met some really amazing people and a lot of them have found new jobs. The way we work is to break down job search into its component parts, study each of those and figure out how to use these parts in ways that give us the best chance of identifying and then getting a job where we will consistently exceed expectations. We start with our skills and strengths, then how to capture that in a resume. A resume that can be tuned to each specific job we apply to. We learn how new tools like Linkedin can be used as tools for helping our friends and allowing them to help us. Then we try to put this all together and into a campaign for a great job. Fully backlined open mic at Skylark starts at 9pm, ages 21+. Our Open Mic rules! There is no host to hog the spotlight, just a friendly sound engineer. You do a quick line check, introduce yourself to the audience, and get right to performing your 15-minute set (three songs is a good estimate since that includes set up and break down time).
Sign-up sheet goes out every Wednesday at 8:00pm sharp (trivia will still be in progress so don’t be alarmed). You must be present in person to sign up for an open mic slot. The only exception is bands on tour who have made arrangements in advance for a particular time.
We are set up for full bands of any genre, singer/songwriters, and pretty much anything else unplugged or plugged. Our backline is one bass amp, two guitar amps, one full drum set, and multiple mics/micstands and music stands. Additional details here.

Westside Unitarian Universalist ChapelEarthrise Chamber Choir’s next concert will be “The Tree of Life — Women Poets and Composers,” focusing on works by Emily Dickenson, Ysaye Barnwell, Pauline Oliveros, Catherine Dalton, and others.
From modern arrangements of 12th-century composer Hildegard von Bingen to the experimental work of Pauline Oliveros, conductor Bert Gulhaugen selected eleven pieces which speak to a particular moment in the life cycle. The concert opens with Catherine Dalton’s haunting piece, “From the State of Emptiness,” which evokes sacred music from many traditions. “I chose it for the opening work because it will help the audience get to a place of peace and calm,” says Gulhaugen. The joyful “Caterpillars Crawl” by Elizabeth Alexander was written for children’s choirs, but Gulhaugen points out its universal message. “We can all be reminded of the life lesson to ‘go out on a limb,’” he says. The concert ends with Gwyneth Walker’s stirring anthem “The Tree of Peace” that exhorts us to listen to one another, that “love shall tread out the fire of anger.”

The class, as always, is open to anyone curious about the marvelous art of Tai Chi. All we ask is that you dress for the weather and bring friends. Let’s welcome June to Seattle with more rain gardens! June 1, 2013 10 am at HPIC, celebrate Community Rain Garden Planting Day and learn about the beautiful rain garden that’s been added to Highland Park Improvement Club’s parking lot. This functional landscape feature is helping prevent polluted runoff from entering the Duwamish River. The soils and the plants were chosen because of their ability to soak up runoff and break down the pollutants.

Log House Museum: Alki Lighthouse exhibit/celebration12:00 pm – 4:00 pm
The Southwest Seattle Historical Society is planning a complementary celebration of the Alki Lighthouse Centennial on Saturday, June 1. That afternoon, during its open hours of noon to 4 pm, the organization’s Log House Museum — just a half mile east of the lighthouse — will host an expanded lighthouse exhibit. The exhibit will feature artifacts, rare photos, memorabilia and artwork, all focused on telling the story of the lighthouse, including the decades prior to its construction when a single lantern provided the same function of aiding the navigation of sailing ships and steering them away from danger.
A brief program on Saturday, June 1, will begin at 2 pm, with presentations by area residents with connections to the lighthouse. A highlight of the afternoon is an emphasis on children’s activities, including an opportunity for each child to color his or her own version of the Alki Lighthouse. Each child who completes the coloring exercise will receive a handmade, hand-decorated cookie that is a replica of the lighthouse.
“We are hoping that everyone who visits the Alki Lighthouse on its first touring day of the summer will also stop in just a few blocks away at our Log House Museum,” says Clay Eals, executive director of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society. “By the end of the afternoon, we hope that at least 100 children will have visited us so that we can display 100 colored versions of the lighthouse in honor of the 100th birthday.”
The expanded lighthouse exhibit will run through early September, with new items added in coming weeks. “We are calling it a centennial summer,” Eals says.

The Seattle Rainmakers play Ultimate Frisbee @ Southwest Athletic Complex7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Major League Ultimate (MLU) is establishing one of its eight professional ultimate frisbee teams in the Seattle area. The Seattle Rainmakers join the MLU’s Western Conference, and kick off their season on April 20th against the Vancouver Nighthawks at SWAC (Southwest Athletic Complex).
The regular season schedule runs from April 20 through June 22. Games are played at the Southwest Athletic Complex near Chief Sealth High School, and tickets are available for $16. Discounts are available for students and children. See the season schedule (with ticketing links) by going here.
The Seattle Rainmakers are coached by the highly decorated Ben Wiggins, a participant in, and coach of, elite ultimate in the northwest for the better part of the last decade. Wiggins has won awards at the highest level of collegiate ultimate, taken three club championships with Seattle’s premier club team, Seattle Sockeye, and has two World Championship silver medals to his name.
“Seattle has an amazing Ultimate community,” said Wiggins. “Hopefully the Rainmakers can show them something new that also embodies a love for the game wherever we play.”
Wiggins selected a 25-man roster in mid-March following a comprehensive two-day combine that tested participants on speed, strength, agility and disc skills. The resulting team is deep on talent, athleticism and, perhaps most importantly, experience.
“I think the Rainmakers are right there talent-wise with the best teams in the league,” said General Manager Max Vitali. “When you look at the years of experience a lot of these players bring and combine it with the pedigree of our coaching staff, it’s tough to find another team in the league that looks better on paper than us.”
Vitali is looking forward to watching his team in action, and has high hopes for their prospects in this inaugural season. More than that, he’s excited to bring a fast-growing sport to the city of Seattle.
“The fans in Seattle have absolutely blown us away over the last several months. We’re overjoyed that we can showcase the next phase of ultimate in their city, and we’re looking forward to bringing home the MLU’s first championship trophy later this summer.”

Seattle Public Utilities invites community input at a meeting on Monday, June 3, 2013 4:30-6:30 pm at Seattle City Hall:
In 2012, 154 million gallons of untreated sewage and stormwater flowed into our lakes, creeks, and Puget Sound. Seattle Public Utilities is preparing a long-range plan that will create a comprehensive strategy to reduce these Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). The plan will:
Identify areas of Seattle where CSO reduction projects are required
Evaluate solutions for reducing CSOs in affected areas
Select a preferred alternative for each affected area
Recommend a schedule for designing and constructing projects from 2016-2025SPU is preparing a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to identify potential impacts to people and the environment. Scoping was done in 2011 to determine the range or “scope” of issues to study in the Programmatic EIS. Since then, federal and state regulators have provided SPU with the option of developing a new approach to the plan that addresses both sewage overflows and stormwater discharges, so there is a new scoping effort underway for the revised plan.

Fully backlined open mic at Skylark starts at 9pm, ages 21+. Our Open Mic rules! There is no host to hog the spotlight, just a friendly sound engineer. You do a quick line check, introduce yourself to the audience, and get right to performing your 15-minute set (three songs is a good estimate since that includes set up and break down time).
Sign-up sheet goes out every Wednesday at 8:00pm sharp (trivia will still be in progress so don’t be alarmed). You must be present in person to sign up for an open mic slot. The only exception is bands on tour who have made arrangements in advance for a particular time.
We are set up for full bands of any genre, singer/songwriters, and pretty much anything else unplugged or plugged. Our backline is one bass amp, two guitar amps, one full drum set, and multiple mics/micstands and music stands. Additional details here.

The class, as always, is open to anyone curious about the marvelous art of Tai Chi. All we ask is that you dress for the weather and bring friends. The main focus of the class is in teaching people what they can do to improve the basic quality of daily life, i.e. smoother, deeper breathing, a more stable sense of balance, how to let stress pass by us rather than trapping it in our bodies, etc. We will be out in the fresh air, having a grand time and maybe even learning something before we’re done.

Join us for this this rare Seattle appearance by noted author, whale researcher and marine conservationist Erich Hoyt, author of Orca: The Whale Called Killer.
Erich Hoyt’s first killer whale expedition to Johnstone Strait sailed from Victoria, BC in June 1973, 40 years ago this June. He proceeded to spend parts of the next 10 summers with orcas, culminating in his now-classic book Orca: The Whale Called Killer. He went on to study and work on conservation projects related to other whales, dolphins, sharks, deep sea creatures, ants and social insects, working in Costa Rica, Japan, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Argentina, Chile and other countries.
In 1999 he co-founded the Far East Russia Orca Project (FEROP) to find out more about orca pods targeted for aquarium captures and to get Russian students involved in science and conservation of killer whales in Russian waters. Now in its 15th year, FEROP has recorded the Russian pods and photo-IDed some 1500 orcas off Kamchatka and in the Commander Islands — including three white orcas found so far in the study areas.
This is the fifth in a series of Orca Talks hosted by The Whale Trail. The event also features updates from Robin Lindsay (Seal Sitters), and “Diver Laura” James (tox-ick.org and Puget Soundkeeper Alliance), and photography from Judy Lane. Buy tickets early!
About the Speaker
Erich Hoyt is a noted marine conservationist, whale researcher, lecturer and author of more than 20 books including Orca: The Whale Called Killer, The Earth Dwellers, and Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises, the latter recently named as an “Outstanding Academic Title” by the journal Choice.He is an authority on marine protected areas (MPAs) and sanctuaries, and is currently Research Fellow with WDC, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, leading its Global Critical Habitat MPA Program. He also co-directs the Far East Russia Orca Project in Kamchatka and the Russian Cetacean Habitat Project in the Commander Islands.
He is as an appointed member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Cetacean Specialist Group and the World Commission on Protected Areas, and co-chairs the new IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force. He is a member of the International Committee for Marine Mammal Protected Areas and has helped organize and program its world conferences in Hawaii (2009), Martinique (2011) and Australia (to be 2014).
A former Vannevar Bush Fellow in the Public Understanding of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and twice James Thurber Writer-in-Residence at The Thurber House, Hoyt was awarded the Mandy McMath Conservation Award in April this year by the European Cetacean Society at its annual conference for his body of work including books, papers and work on marine conservation. He is a Canadian-US dual citizen who has lived in Scotland since 1989.
About The Whale Trail
The Whale Trail (www.thewhaletrail.org) is a series of sites around the region where the public may view orcas and other marine mammals from shore. Our mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment by establishing a network of viewing sites along the whales’ trails through the Salish Sea and the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest.Our goals are to increase awareness that our marine waters are home to orcas and other species; connect visitors to orcas, other marine wildlife and their habitat; inspire stewardship and build community; promote land-based whale watching. Our over-arching goal is to ensure the southern resident orcas do not go extinct.
The Whale Trail provides simple, powerful, and long-lasting reminders to visitors and residents alike that orcas and other whales live in our waters. Through our current sites and signs, including two on every Washington State ferry, we reach more than 22 million people each year. Our near-term goals are to add a site in every coastal county in Washington, and around Vancouver Island, throughout the orcas’ range. Together, we will turn the tide for the whales!
The Whale Trail is led by a core team of partners including NOAA Fisheries, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, and the Whale Museum. Donna Sandstrom is the Founder and Executive Director. The Whale Trail is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, registered in Washington State.

Season Finale: Spring Into Summer Presented by The West Seattle Symphony Orchestra -Concert to close the season with classical orchestra literature by Massenet, Brahms, Schubert, and more!
Musicians of WSCO’s Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Kim Roy, prepare to take stage with a unique integration of classical works from familiar tunes to honored favorites — a little something for everyone.
Featured soloist will be Rachel Nesvig performing on violin, Massenet’s Meditation from the Opera “Thais”. She received her Masters in Violin Performance and K-12 teaching certificate in music from Central Washington University in 2011. Besides teaching string instruments, Rachel plays with various symphonies in the area and leads WSCO’s Debut Orchestra.
This final program of the season will be performed on Tuesday, June 11 at Chief Sealth International High School Auditorium.
Admission is free. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated!
About WSCO:
The West Seattle Community Orchestras (WSCO) was founded in 2003 as a community outlet for local musicians all of ages to engage in music-making through this unique intergenerational group of three orchestras. The Debut Orchestra is for beginning players; the Intermediate Orchestra, and Symphony, for community members and more experienced students. In total 190 musicians take part in the making of music, 100 of them from third grade through high school. Each week, professional coaching is provided for string students by Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra (SYSO) through a generous grant from the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Every season I have a special seasonal challenge that culminates in a $3 per person championship night. The Winter Challenge for 2013 starts next week.

Fully backlined open mic at Skylark starts at 9pm, ages 21+. Our Open Mic rules! There is no host to hog the spotlight, just a friendly sound engineer. You do a quick line check, introduce yourself to the audience, and get right to performing your 15-minute set (three songs is a good estimate since that includes set up and break down time).
Sign-up sheet goes out every Wednesday at 8:00pm sharp (trivia will still be in progress so don’t be alarmed). You must be present in person to sign up for an open mic slot. The only exception is bands on tour who have made arrangements in advance for a particular time.
We are set up for full bands of any genre, singer/songwriters, and pretty much anything else unplugged or plugged. Our backline is one bass amp, two guitar amps, one full drum set, and multiple mics/micstands and music stands. Additional details here.

6–9 pmInstead of closing shop when things got tough, Interstitial Theatre found a creative solution to better serve artists and the community. Starting this April, the 3 ladies of Interstitial Theatre are bringing video art to 8 different neighborhoods across Seattle with their Mobile Video Screen.
The reels feature internationally and locally acclaimed artists for a total of 14 talented people and 3 different reels. “Video Art will not be ignored” says Interstitial Theatre’s co-founder & Lead Curator Julia Bruk, “because we are bringing it directly to the community.”
After learning that their building in SoDO was closing, the women of Interstitial Theatre took matters into their own hands and built a mobile, weatherproof box-on-wheels to house a screen for exhibiting video art. The Mobile Screen was an instant hit at last Summer’s art events; NEPO 5k Don’t Run and Push Arts New Media Festival. This
Spring and Summer citizens of Seattle will experience video art in their own backyards. Over the course of the next 6 warmer months (April-Sept) the Mobile Screen will stop in Pioneer Square, Capitol Hill, Ballard, Georgetown, Columbia City, West Seattle, PhinneyRidge/Greenwood and the International District.Since Interstitial Theatre opened its doors just 3 years ago, they have successfully produced 25 exhibits featuring video and new media art by over 45 different artists, showcasing primarily local talent. The women of Interstitial Theatre are passionate in their belief that video and new media art is essential for the public to experience.
“It’s becoming progressively harder to live without pixels embedded into our every day routines and the Mobile Screen offers a way to critique our evolving culture” says Julia Greenway, Curator at Interstitial Theatre.
Interstitial Theatre is breaking boundaries, finding unique ways to exhibit artwork and make new media art accessible to the larger Seattle public at no charge.
With this tour, Interstitial Theatre hopes to encourage people to stop and think, just for a moment, about how the screens in their lives affect their own relationships to the world around them.

Teepa Snow: Caring for those with Dementia @ Providence Mount St. Vincent7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Providence Mount St. Vincent will once again bring dementia care educator Teepa Snow to Seattle to train caregivers how to care for those living with dementia.
Snow will offer three free workshops. All will take place at the Providence Mount St. Vincent Chapel – 3rd floor, 4831 35th Ave SW, Seattle.
These presentations are ideal for professional and family caregivers helping a loved one living with dementia at home or other living situations such as assisted living facilities or nursing homes.
Session one, “The ABCs of Dementia and Caregiving,” will be held Tuesday, June 18, 2013, from 7 to 9 pm. No RSVP is needed.
Session two, “Focus on activities: What’s cooking and activities and programming for men,” will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2013, from 8 am to 12 pm. RSVP requested for those staying for lunch (small charge, cash or check only).
Session three, “Focus on caregiving tasks and getting the person clean and mouth care,” will be held Wednesday June 19, 2013, from 1 to 5 pm. RSVP requested for those staying for lunch (small charge, cash or check only).
Teepa Snow has worked for more than 30 years in geriatrics, receiving local, statewide and national recognition for her expertise in geriatrics, dementia care and staff training. She has developed two training videos, published many articles, and presents on a variety of topics.
Snow’s workshops on caring for those with memory problems have been offered across the country. They help caregivers better understand dementia conditions and the symptoms that accompany them and provide tools and knowledge to help caregivers better interact and communicate with those they care for. Caregivers will learn how to provide care without taking over and will be encouraged to take care of themselves and reach out to others to form stronger ties and support. Whether a professional or family caregiver, a volunteer or a student, this workshop will be valuable to you.

Teepa Snow: Caring for those with Dementia @ Providence Mount St. Vincent8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Providence Mount St. Vincent will once again bring dementia care educator Teepa Snow to Seattle to train caregivers how to care for those living with dementia.
Snow will offer three free workshops. All will take place at the Providence Mount St. Vincent Chapel – 3rd floor, 4831 35th Ave SW, Seattle.
These presentations are ideal for professional and family caregivers helping a loved one living with dementia at home or other living situations such as assisted living facilities or nursing homes.
Session two, “Focus on activities: What’s cooking and activities and programming for men,” will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2013, from 8 am to 12 pm. RSVP requested for those staying for lunch (small charge, cash or check only).
Session three, “Focus on caregiving tasks and getting the person clean and mouth care,” will be held Wednesday June 19, 2013, from 1 to 5 pm. RSVP requested for those staying for lunch (small charge, cash or check only).
Teepa Snow has worked for more than 30 years in geriatrics, receiving local, statewide and national recognition for her expertise in geriatrics, dementia care and staff training. She has developed two training videos, published many articles, and presents on a variety of topics.
Snow’s workshops on caring for those with memory problems have been offered across the country. They help caregivers better understand dementia conditions and the symptoms that accompany them and provide tools and knowledge to help caregivers better interact and communicate with those they care for. Caregivers will learn how to provide care without taking over and will be encouraged to take care of themselves and reach out to others to form stronger ties and support. Whether a professional or family caregiver, a volunteer or a student, this workshop will be valuable to you.

A weekly parent/caregiver drop in and free program to build learning through free play and social time. We provide a wide variety of toys and activities including building blocks, trains and cars, play sets, counting tools, dolls, hand-eye coordination resources, manipulative, books, play dishes and much more. We also include circle time, music, stories, and special presentations to build skills for preschool and kindergarten and supporting families to foster family success. Open to all West Seattle families and caregivers.

Early Days is a drop-in support group for moms with babies up to 1-year. Early Days provides a safe, welcoming, nonjudgemental space for moms to talk about the emotional changes and challenges of motherhood. By coming together, we break isolation, and offer support and validation for each mother’s journey.
Early Days is an independent nonprofit & does not promote any particular parenting philosophy. Come chat about the realities of motherhood!

Come to the Southwest library for up to an hour of free, one-on-one help with basic technology and Library services. Registration is required. Library staff are available to answer your questions about technology and Library services. Learn how to use an e-reader, get a free email address or request books and DVDs.

- Computer basics
- Internet basics

Bring your toddler to the Delridge Community Center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 pm to 4 pm, to burn off some energy in the indoor gym. Your child will learn social skills, develop hand-eye coordination, and make new friends. A parent or responsible caregiver (18 or older) must be present at all times.
