West Seattle Crime Watch: Midday break-in

From Greg: “Just a heads up that my house was broken into sometime between 11:00 am and 1:45 today on Charlestown St. Looks like they used a crowbar to tear through the door. The cops came by pretty quickly but the perps did take some items including a laptop, 2 rather large jars full of coins, and a Samsung HD camcorder. Now it’s off to fix things they broke.” He didn’t want to get more specific about the location on Charlestown than “west of California.” (map) By the way, the next West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting, where you’ll hear about crime trends and get to bring up concerns to local police leadership, is two weeks from tomorrow – 7 pm October 20, Southwest Precinct meeting room.

I wonder if the new QFC has a Coinstar machine?

  • Leroniusmonkfish October 5, 2009 (5:17 pm)

Those Coinstar machines should have cameras on them just like ATM’s…

5 minutes inside of the bank today, was enough time to walk off with my bike today..at about 3:15 pm…Even though it surprised me, I chose to look at it like such: they must have needed it more then I did. And No it WAS NOT locked up, but my trip inside of wells fargo at the junction was literally 5 minutes of less.

Oh and let me add…. My bike is my primary transportation…but my feet and bus (although cranky bus operators and patrons are truly disheartening)will have 2 do. So there, peace be..even with those who are (“forced”)to steal. Materials come and go

I walked on charlestown from 48th to 53rd around noon and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. charlestown’s pretty busy–bold thieves.

Sorry Greg to hear about your loss. Please check with your neughbors and make sure they did not see anything that would help you recover your property. As to your coins, I have approached the QFC management and hope they can monitor their Coinstar machine more carefully. I understand there are no cameras that would record Coinstar users. My burglar was a frequent user of the machine at the Westwood Village QFC.

My Grandfather came to Seattle in 1901. My Father grew up in Seattle and after returning from WWII was burglarized on East Denny Way in 1949. His War Bonds were taken, but because he recorded their serial numbers, the loss was minimized. I was burglarized in 1975 in the University District and happened to return as the burglar was leaving my front door. This thief dropped my stereo receiver and fled out the back door, I chased him and reported his license number. He was made to pay for his crime.

My luck caught up with me in September of this year. My Burglarbustindad story is recorded here. Less then two weeks later, a $700 lawn mower was missing from my Vashon Island property. Soon my neighbors knew who had violated the trust of our neighborhood. After days of confronting the known thieves, the King County Sheriff took a report today and the community lead me to my property.

It is not about ethnicity, it’s about drugs and crime and the lack of consequences for violating the trust of our neighborhoods. This should not stand. Please be alert and take back our neighborhoods

  • Leroniusmonkfish October 5, 2009 (11:35 pm)

A lot better than it is in WS it sounds like.

WS, keeps going down hill, even the “nice areas” are not immune. True, the economy is not the greatest right now but I have noticed a down turn the last 15 years or so. Kind of sorry I chose this area to put down roots..

Sorry, comment time is over.
