Three items to share this afternoon, from three West Seattle neighborhoods – but first, another reminder that tomorrow is your deadline to sign up your block to close the street for a Night Out block party next Tuesday night; here’s how to do it online. (UPDATE: The deadline’s just been extended to Monday.) Now, the Crime Watch reports; in fact, the first item is a reminder of how much “neighbor power” can do to fight crime – read on:

From a North Delridge resident:

I just wanted to let everybody know about a thwarted burglary today, and the importance of good neighbors. I got a call (yesterday) from my neighbor saying that he caught someone trying to break into my house.

While outside around 1 pm my neighbor heard glass break and thinking it was me decided to look over this fence to give me a hard time only to see a 30 something white male trying to climb through my window. The burglar ran away and lucky for us was never able to get inside thus leaving without any loot. My fiance and I are so happy and feel so lucky to have such great neighbors who look out for one another. We called the cops and they were able to pull some fingerprints so hopefully those pan out. We live on 26th ave sw and Alaska [map] right by the Delridge playfield. My neighbor chased after but was unable to catch the would be robber but he said he was a white male 30 something, 6ft 180 lbs and wearing a burnt orange shirt. I know this is kind of late but we feel the neighborhood should know. Even though it is hot we had all of or windows and doors closed and that didn’t stop them so just remember to take precaution and if you don’t know them already, get to know your neighbors because you never know when they might be there for you.

From John in Highland Park (who reported another incident in the same block earlier this week):

There was another home burglary and one aborted attempt in the block of 7700 14th ave SW [map] on 7/28 during daylight hours. The attempted burglary was about 5:30 am. The persons (2 or 3) came through a closed gate in the back yard (alley access) and went towards a closed window. The owners LARGE dog barked which chased off the persons. The home burglary was also during daylight hours, and either they jammed the front door lock or climbed through a 2nd deck which had a open slider. … The owner called 911 about 6 pm, but they did not respond until about 2 hours later.

And from Jill, who says this happened last week near 44th/Genesee (map):

On Thursday night we had a deep fat turkey fryer + propane tank stolen from our back alley in front of our shed (I know, it is not that important and it was our fault for leaving out). Nevertheless, just a reminder for everyone to be aware and keep eyes open. We have never had one problem on our block since moving in over a year ago so we feel lucky. I think there are a lot of bored kids out there right now because our fence post was knocked off the same night.
