West Seattle Crime Watch: Fauntleroy stolen-stone saga

Local artist Paul Sorey posted his crime report in the WSB Forums – Two tons of stone, stolen from the Fauntleroy Church parking lot last weekend. Paul’s post links to a webpage he created with photos of similar stones. We just called him to find out a bit more: He says the stone was meant for use in a memorial garden at the church, and the two tons of stolen stone represent about a quarter of what they were using for the project.

How does one carry 2 tons of stone away quickly and without effort?

  • how did no one see this happening? July 16, 2009 (2:00 pm)

at what time of day was this stolen? hard to imagine no one saw it happening! bizarre! probably already unloaded somewhere.

I saw a pile of large, tan-colored rocks last evening around 35th Ave. SW and 96th/97th/98th. What did the ones from the church look like?

Guess what??!! — a loyal WSB reader SAW the stone and emailed me… I checked it out and sure enough, there it was! The police have been alerted, but I haven’t heard back from them yet… Meanwhile, Owen Lei from King 5 news, having seen the blog post, called me wanting to get an interview. When he learned that I had found the stone, however, he decided that it was no longer a story. I suggested to him that the story worth telling might instead be that the West Seattle Blog was a highly effective tool for getting the church’s stone back. He’s thinking
about it… Anyway, thanks for your help!

Hi, Paul, glad to hear it! We’ve already been blessed with a lot of coverage about how West Seattle neighbors use WSB as a place to share and learn the latest information/news, including situations like this. I’m just glad to hear this case might be resolved – hope you hear from the police soon! – TR

I think that would be a great story angle! The reality is that a resource like the WSB can solve more crimes than the Seattle Police (not that they don’t do their best). Good work!!

I use the Seattle Times and TV news for basically the Pet Walking forecast, the weather in general or general light info. When I want to know what is going on in my area, I use the WS blog. Useful and timely stuff. If you want to see pictures of hydros or children at a beach (pretty much the same every year) by all means spend 75 cents on the Times

I would like a follow up on the stone.
    What happens next?

Sorry, comment time is over.
