1st report: 34th District Democrats’ candidate forum

This is the epicenter of Seattle politics tonight – The Hall at Fauntleroy, where the 34th District Democrats are hosting their big candidates’ forum — all major races except King County Executive (that race was handled with a separate forum across the street at Fauntleroy Church [WSB sponsor] last week). The major candidates for mayor are all here – including incumbent Greg Nickels, Councilmember Jan Drago, Michael McGinn, Joe Mallahan, James Donaldson, Norman Sigler. If there are any fireworks during the meeting, we’ll add them here – otherwise look for the detailed report later (we’ll also be tweeting from time to time at @wsblive rather than our regular Twitter account). The first few minutes focused on the mayoral race, with yes/no questions – notably, “Do you support parking meters in The Junction?” Nickels no, Drago yes. ADDED 8:05 PM: The mayoral section of the forum is over, no fireworks. Questions included support for labor, philosophy on transportation and helping the homeless. “Nickelsville” only came up when Mallahan alluded to it but said he would only call it a “tent city” because anything else “wouldn’t be fair.”

Nicklesville seemed to be on the minds of quite a few people who were there–a number of the members were wearing “I [heart] Nickelsville” buttons as were at least three of the Seattle Council candidates.

Several of the Nickleodeons, residents of Nickelesville, were also at the meeting.

I think it’s only fair to point out that one of the major mayoral candidates was not at the 34th District meeting, Elizabeth Campbell, because she was out doing her civic duty, setting up shop at the WSDOT/SDOT tunnel scoping meeting and gathering signatures for the I-99 NO TUNNEL initiative. It was a bit like combat duty, going into the lair of the opposition.

Why would we vote for her (Campbell) for mayor if she doesn’t even do us the courtesy of showing up to talk about her positions? Not bloody likely.

Thanks to everyone who made it! I wished that we had many more hours to really cover questions. Thanks especially to all the candidates! And TR, of course!

Full report to come by early morning. Waiting for some pix to come in. More proof you have to stay till the end of events like this – the best snipey campaign line actually came in the City Attorney candidate discussion, after 9:30.

Why is “angry” a good trait for an atty? I just don’t get it.

@ Jeralyn: I agree– Tom Carr always seems like he’s one wrong look away from blowing up. Definite contrast to Peter Holmes who is an oasis of calm. I am almost less concerned about the finer points of this race than I am about Mr. Carr’s well being. Does anyone know if this is how he’s always been or is this a change?

Why would we want a former bankruptcy attorney to run our City Attorney’s office? Get real.

You would vote for me because you recognize that I take my obligations to work for certain things to heart, that I try to be a good representative for the causes I am associating with, that I stick with the jobs that I commit to, that I take my responsibilities seriously. I had a choice, to either go promote myself or to promote a cause that many people have both given money, time, or support to, the I-99 initiative. There will be multiple opportunities to get to know me, including on the web, other forums, in print, in the media. So my not being there last night was not about snubbing the 34th District, it was about doing something for the people of the 34th District.

Look forward to the next opportunity to meet and greet those who I missed last night.

    Elizabeth Campbell
