West Seattle Crime Watch: Just another reminder …

… not to leave anything in your car:

Around 3:00 today, I bought some cookies and other things from Metropolitan Market. I took in my own cloth bag to carry them. When I came out, I tossed them on the floor of the car by the rest of my bags. I went to the library and browsed for books. When I got home around 3:30, I reached for the bag of groceries. It was no longer in the car.

I’m going to miss that cloth bag.

KatherineL

We asked her two followups. Answers: She was parked in the library spaces, not the market’s lot, and yes, she left the car unlocked.

I hope they enjoyed the cookies. Very sorry this happened :(

  • V February 23, 2010 (9:32 pm)

Who leaves their car unlocked?? We lock our cars always – even in the garage!

  • coffee February 23, 2010 (10:33 pm)

I was talking to our groomer today, across from Met Market, Muttley Crew Cuts and they were telling me that in the underground lot, which you enter right behind them, goes under Bartels I believe, many cars have been broken into. They bust the window and clean out the car. I had not heard of this problem in this particular lot.

  • The Velvet Bulldog February 23, 2010 (10:35 pm)

V: sometimes people forget to lock car doors. Perhaps not perfect people, but it does occasionally happen to the rest of us.

  • transplantella February 23, 2010 (10:48 pm)

Of course it was theft, no argument there…..

But they took only food. :(

A terrible sign of the times.

  • Eric February 23, 2010 (10:54 pm)

I rarely lock my doors (much to the wife’s dismay). I grew up in the country where you trust everybody (and everybody had guns). Besides, why lose a window and have to clean up the glass? I just don’t leave anything of value in the car.
    .
Perhaps you should bake some nice cookies and put the car in the same spot. Ex-Lax makes a chocolate substitute just for cookie thieves.

I have noticed on the crime watch that there have been 21 crimes in west seattle in the past 22 days.Thats almost 1 crime per day. That trend shows that in the remaining 6 days in February is likely to see 5 more crimes this month. And this is only the crimes reported. Now I know why people living inside and outside of west seattle refer to it as the ghetto.

  • arborheightsdad February 24, 2010 (6:45 am)

Egigik–Here’s an assignment for you: find any other area of Seattle that does not have at least one crime reported every day.

  • mark February 24, 2010 (6:50 am)

Ghetto? That cracks me up. When you have a few minutes check out the police blog in the Ghetto across the lake (Bellevue). Roughly same population size, roughly same amount of reported crime. Nothing better than as armchair complainer with no facts to support a rant!!!

  • samson February 24, 2010 (7:24 am)

wake up people! keep your eyes open! no things – NOTHING in the vehicle! that will make prowlers go away. come on West Seattlities – could you do that for yourself to save your money to spend on glass and miss your things? we could prove Thiefs there are nothing in our vehicles to sell. lets do this!!!

Many years ago when I travelled to Vancouver, B.C. I was told to leave NOTHING in the car.
Cars had been broken into for dirty rags and even a few Canadian pennies. I would say this kind of theft is common.

  • OP February 24, 2010 (8:55 am)

There’s an APB out on the Cookie Monster.

  • KatherineL February 24, 2010 (10:23 am)

    LOL, OP!

I was tempted into buying a gorgeous African violet at Met Market. They put it in a paper bag separate from the groceries. The thief had to reach beyond that bag to pick up the other bag, but left the plant. Obviously he’s not a dirt-y thief.

A car was window-smashed in an alley near Othello and 35th last night. Not my car, so don’t know what was taken – just a data-point. (I informed the owner, who already knew about the problem.)

  • Glen and Warren February 24, 2010 (12:32 pm)

    Katherine

The staff at your local neighborhood Metropolitan Market felt bad upon reading your tale. The next time you are in our store, please stop by to introduce yourself to Glen, Warren, or one of the Customer Service Managers. We will gladly replace the items taken from your car. We would like to affirm that the West Seattle neighborhood is a great place to live and shop!

  • The Velvet Bulldog February 24, 2010 (1:49 pm)

Glen and Warren: Hooray! What a wonderful gesture! Met Market has always been very community-minded (thanks again from a former WS Garden Tour Chairperson) and this outreach is further evidence of the commitment to the WS community. Thank you Metropolitan Market for taking care of neighbors!

  • linda February 24, 2010 (2:15 pm)

To Egigik, If west Seattle is so ghetto than please move we in West Seattle are quite proud to live here. We are so close to everything how spoiled can we get. Crime is everywhere wake up!!!!!!!!

  • Koni February 24, 2010 (2:26 pm)

    Yea Linda!

  • mark February 24, 2010 (3:07 pm)

I suppose we have another reason to shop at Met Market now, well besides the malted milk balls and beer selection and cheese and meats and seafood and Cupcake Royale Cupcakes and the food bar and coffee and they always give my dog a treat at the flower stand and and and and

    • WSB February 24, 2010 (3:15 pm)

And they’re a WSB sponsor as of a few months ago. We of course advocate supporting West Seattle businesses, sponsors or not – the more successful they are, the healthier our community is! — but the sponsors’ support makes it possible for us to keep going with 24/7 West Seattle news, so we hope you’ll all show them maximum love. (Metropolitan Market is one of two WSB grocery-store sponsors – the other is, also locally owned, PCC.)

  • KatherineL February 24, 2010 (6:00 pm)

Not to mention, mark, the Dare cookies, which I haven’t found anywhere else in the area.

  • Egigik February 24, 2010 (10:57 pm)

Ahhh…Mark and linda the the typical liberal rantings.Out of the USA in 3 more years. Have fun with nobama.Been here all my life and it’s your type messing up WS.Also maybe the country. sorry for striking a nerve on you two.

  • Egigik February 24, 2010 (11:06 pm)

To Mark and Linda,I never called WS the ghetto. I said other people not living in WS did.
Before with you start a post,THINK a bit about it before you start ranting like typical liberals.

  • mark February 25, 2010 (6:54 am)

Liberal rantings? Um, no, just simple facts. Get over it already.

  • Koni February 25, 2010 (12:55 pm)

Egigik…..I am happy to “rant like a typical liberal” in the company of Linda and Mark, at least I am respectful of my community members and not snarky like some…

  • Egigik February 25, 2010 (6:35 pm)

    Get off the meds.

  • mark February 25, 2010 (7:13 pm)

Off the meds? You hate Obama, want to move out of the USA? What country do you think you might find more conservative that the good old USA? Russia? China? Iran? ha ha, have fun there!!! As liberal as we are, we are still way behind the rest of the civilized world!!

  • Egigik February 26, 2010 (5:29 am)

Ya got to just LET IT GO MARK. Your starting to look foolish in these posts. How many times have you been in jail?

  • mark February 26, 2010 (7:20 am)

Egigik, I am sorry for pointing out the obvious flaws in your posts. I admit I have never been in jail, I guess that means I have no clue what or where a Ghetto is….

This personal back-and-forth is NOT what we do here. And it’s not related to the original topic, either. So I’m closing comments here. If you have something to bring up for discussion, without namecalling or person-to-person squabbling, the Forum’s a great place:
