Update: More radar-powered speed-watching signs go up

A little more than a week after we told you about that speed-radar sign going up on northbound 35th near Willow, two more are up: Southbound 35th near Brandon, and southbound Fauntleroy near Brandon (map). (Thanks to Bob Loblaw for the tip on the Fauntleroy sign, which as of our drive-by a short time ago was not yet activated, though the other two – which start checking your speed about a block before you get to them are.)

I could have sworn that sign was activated yesterday when I drove through. Right after I noticed the sign, there was a horrible motorcycle accident a few blocks up Faultneroy. Anyone know if the motorcyclist is okay?

I was waiting for the bus at around 8am and the Fauntleroy/Brandon speed sign was working. So were tons of brake lights. :)

I love these signs. Finally something to at least make people think about exactly how fast they are going. I was heading to work yesterday and the one on 35th northbound caught the car passing me at 48mph!!

Now if they would only put another sign on Brandon Street to slow down Papa John’s pizza delivery drivers. They treat Brandon St. like a freeway without any regard for safety. Worst of all, repeated calls to their regional and national management have had no result. Calls to the Seattle Police have had no result either. It’s only a matter of time till they kill a cat or a kid. All for a pizza.

I’ve got passes both Mon & Tues morning on the way to work on 35th northbound too…. I can’t think of the cross street, it’s near the big water tower… they had to be going at least 45. I either get passed or tailgated all the way to the bridge even with that sign there. Makes me crazy!

Garlic Jims has a speeding problem too and same result when reporting it, nothing.

A driver from Garlic Jim’s slammed his car into my garage door lat year. His car had no working breaks. He had no insurance, and no one from Garlic Jim’s would return my attempts to contact them. Garlic Jim’s has NO REGARD for public safety. They simply do not care.

How does one go about requesting sharrows? Know of any plans to add them to Fauntleroy between California and Alaska?

Are the speed signs good for anything other then telling you how fast you’re going?

  • WSB October 28, 2008 (3:58 pm)

    Teresa: That’s pretty much it.
Manuel: The citywide bicycle master plan shows what’s scheduled to go in where.
Zoom in on West Seattle locations in this map:

The Fauntleroy sign seems to be working/not working today. Not sure if it’s triggered by somebody going a certain speed over the limit, or if it just needs to power up (solar has been readily available the last two days, thankfully).
    .
Anyhow, they are not photo equipped or designed to do anything other than alert folks to the speed. I think that’s a deterrent and not a challenge :-)

I get a kick out of seeing all the red tail lights
as the speeding cars see how really fast they are going! Even my husband has slowed down knowing he
will see how fast he really does go! Thank you for the reminder, I think it may be helping a little.

Sorry, comment time is over.
