I have a couple of plain old fashioned VCRS in need of repair, but I’m not where I can take them. There used to be a place in White Center, but it’s not there anymore. Any recommendations? Thanks.

I am one of the maybe 1% still using vcrs; have had many break down; seems to be easier/perhaps cheaper to just get “new”-working-used vcr; I currently have stack of 3 broken vcrs to take to ecycling center, after receiving working vcrs discarded by folks who have all the newfangled gadgets and no longer using a vcr; I ran ad on freecycle and craigs list wanted sections; often people post ads on both of those offering free working vcrs

it will probably cost more to fix them that just buying a new one. if there is something really special about the ones you have, you might try just asking for ones from here or craigslist that people are looking to get rid of. People are still readily disposing of VCRs as new VCR/DVD combos are pretty cheap. if the repair route doesn’t pan out, then you can try to fix it yourself. Go here:

Very cool site and you may be able to solve your problem without a soldering iron:)

I replaced a power supply on my VCR years ago because a power surge in the house took it out. A regulator blew and i had to replace it. i found a rebuild kit on the internet for $20 and did it myself. worked perfectly after that.

There was a place on 35th near Westwood that advertised VCR repair. I am not sure its still there but you might want to look next time you go 35th. I think its near the flower shop.

Yes, if it is still there, it is next door to Kenyon Hall.

I don’t bother fixing them anymore. I bought a replacement belt and roller kit from an auction in 1988 and only ran out of usable repair parts about 5 years ago.

Since I can’t buy the same assortment anymore, it is nearly impossible to fix them for less than you can buy a cheap one from costco or online.

It is a sad situation but that’s one of the reasons there is no money in fixing VCRs or CDs anymore.

Be careful fellow WSBers. It appears Hamed resurrected a 12+ year old thread in order to post the link above. I didn’t click on it so it could actually be legitimate but I doubt it. VCRs were a thing of the past twelve years ago. Anyway, just trying to prevent a scam. Carry on.

WOW, a 12 year old text comes back to haunt us. Thanks for the reminder to look where and when the sender sent it.
