Just found our post that mentioned what they did in 2006 – they opened the Delridge and Southwest Community Centers.

    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=786

But keep in mind, that was somewhat determined by geography – Alki, Hiawatha, High Point CC’s vicinities had many fewer people out of power. However, it at least gives you some idea for starters that if you cannot get info (and seriously, write our number down and stick it in your wallet – 206/293-6302 – we answer 24/7 and are here to help), go to your nearest community center.

If you don’t know where one is, the addresses are all listed on this page, and there’s a “center finder” map:

I’ve got a fire place, the warmest blankets ever, cookie mix, food for days, an extensive DVD collection, recline-able couches and a snuggly kitty. Oh! And half a bottle of the last offering of Framboise that Metro Market had to offer. If you find yourself in Westwood hit us up! :) We rarely lose power *knocks on wood*

You all are welcome to join me in Todos Santos on the Baja :). Not a typical way to stay warm during a Seattle power outage, but a darn good one, I must say.

    Don’t hate me, now.

I should bake up a batch of cookies and stick them in the freezer and take them out when we loose power and go to Cait’s house and beg admitance with cookies. That is if I don’t eat them first. And Mellaw can do shuttle service. She shuttled me from the Junction area to Westwood Village today and was an awesome driver. She made it look effortless.

Celeste, if you’ve got cookies there won’t be any begging involved! :) Never underestimate the compassion of the chubby, cookie-weak and cabin-fevered.

Wow, this is great. I will be writing down these resources. I should have known this community would be all over it. The power outage thing freaks me out!

I will be contributing Jameson, Bacardi, and hopefully some Bailey’s and Kahlua tomorrow. Bailey’s makes really bad thermos coffee good again. I always have chocolate on hand, no firefighters but I might trap a UPS guy tomorrow and have him help me “re-educate” Fed-X.

westseattledood, we actually WANT to go to Todos Santos. I wish you well. By the time I see you again I should be over the urge to run you down, steal your identity, and go in your place. Have a GREAT trip!

Thanks for the generator tips, Mike!

Thanks TR. Sorry about your fishie! I’ve been thinking about my cat, thus the generator. We would have to take our dog with us. I just want to be prepared for the worst. Better to be prepared. We have a fireplace too, BTW but I don’t honestly think it will give off much heat.

    I HATE being cold :(

brawny beefy firefighters with the benefit of brains bringing bereft blog buddies bags of warm blankies, bacon, baked goods and booze (don’t forget the B&B). oh, and a bullet-proof vest for baja-bound dood (stay safe down there).

    Ellenater –

seriously, in the previous storm, I recall folks sharing generators with neighbors. My neighbor went out and bought one of those jumbo ones and a couple of houses plugged into it. It was an awesome expression of goodwill among neighbors.

I hope that NONE of this happens while I’m out of town, for the record. That would be HORRIBLE! However, I think you all should eat as many baked goods as possible and consume liberal amounts of high quality libations to keep the blood moving.

And have yourselves a very Merry and Warm Christmas!

I’m with you on being cold, ellenator, and power outages in general. I’ve been totally stressed all day about the coming doom. Earlier today, I said to DH, “we should do laundry before the power goes out.” He just *laughed*, omg, can you even believe it!?

After the ’06 outages we’ve taken great measures to prevent the major discomforts from happening again. So we now have a gas fireplace insert, which got its test run in the outage that happened just this Oct. (I think for only a few of us and just for a night). We have gas hot water and stove, and, thank goodness, PLENTY of booze on hand. So my only concern now is how to generate enough light to knit by. :)

Also, C&P had electricity during the ’06 storm, and they were the place to be, in case anyone’s interested…

On another note, the thing I find most frustrating in these situations is the assumption that people are supposed to be able to get to web sites for the latest info. Um, like, the last I checked, our network (wireless and not even that behind the times) needed, like, electricity to run. Just sayin, we’re probably not all that unusual.

Good point about the ability to access web information. I think that is why the Emergency Preparedness groups have been plugging away at growing neighborhood Emergency groups so folks have a physical place to gather, in large part.

TR would know the details, but I think only SOME peninsula hoods are on aboard with it. It’s a good idea, for just the reason you stated.

westseattledood, you’re making it hard to hate you. You could bring back the pool boy’s thong as a warm remembrance. :)

Jill, where do you live?! I’ll be on my way. You think I’m kidding but i’m not, lol. I made some malabrigo mittens for Sam yesterday. They are hella cute.

We just loaded up on wood, water, flashlights, etc. Roxbuty Auto still has chains, btw!

All that’s left is booze! Will report more later. Oh and couldn’t find a generator to save our lives!

This may not be helpful to the community at large but it’s an idea for those in apartment buildings. I have found myself with spare flashlights and candles/candle holders/matches so I am posting a sign in our lobby for anyone in the building who couldn’t get out, even to the close-by 7-11 – or just needs some extras to stop on by! Thought it would be good to offer those now while we still have power on!

while living on the east-side many years ago, some drunken foo’ torched our whole building when he passed out and knocked over a candle. many of us had to be rescued by above-mentioned brawny beefy firefighters…i’d stick to passing out flashlights in some cases. i’m just sayin’.
