We need to buy a bedroom set for my stepson, who is coming to live with us permanently this fall (yay!). Like many in this economy, we’re on a budget. We’ve looked at IKEA and Wal-Mart didn’t find anything we liked.

We cannot spend $2,000 on a bed and dresser set, so it seems like all the major furniture stores are out. Any ideas on where else to shop? Obviously, outside West Seattle is fine.

    Thanks!

Craigslist and/or YardSales. my sister did that for her kids and got great quality stuff for a couple of hundred dollars and a can of paint.

    hopey..

there used to be a couple of inexpensive furniture warehouse places over by IKEA that had good prices because they were in such direct competition with IKEA. i would check there.

i think there is also one down on 1st near the starbucks building. i looked there when we moved here and was looking for a few inexpensive pieces to fill in.

and.. have you looked at K-mart? i know… but i actually found a couple of pretty good looking very inexpensive pieces there that blend right in with my more expensive furniture.

and.. cruising past the goodwill on about 122nd in Burien is not a bad option for pieces you can paint.. they have stuff sitting on the front walk every day and often have discounts… asking the guy in front to discount stuff works pretty well there most days.

i can’t remember if they had new mattresses and box springs in there last time i was there or not. they generally do.

And of course.. craig’s list. you would be amazed what some people are selling and the end of the school year is a good time to pick up great deals on bedroom furniture… all those kids moving home and wanting to jettison their furniture.

I hadn’t really thought of craigslist as a viable option, but I also hadn’t considered the “end of the school year” aspect either. I’ll take a look.

I know it’s a long drive, but I’d highly recommend the Costco Home store in Kirkland just off 405. They have a great selection and even better prices! Unfortunately they don’t have a Costco Home website (only 2 stores worldwide, Kirkland and Phoenix). Got great deals on mattress there before that made it well worth the trip.

We got my daughter’s toddler bed at Cribs2Bunks down in Tukwila – http://www.cribs2bunks.com/

It’s a nice store and seemed reasonably priced for kids furniture.

Also, if USA Baby is still open down near the Southcenter Mall, we’ve had great buying experiences there. Lots of bedroom options and some very cool stuff.

“Go To Your Room” on Bel-Red Road or MOR Furniture in Renton are good “new” options. But yes, I agree – craigslist is your best bet. Many times you can find whole sets for cheap in good condition!

Just an FYI – Costco is closing the two home stores – tomorrow (July 3). Tough times.

Thanks for all the recs! Via craigslist I found a store down in Federal Way that is selling bedroom sets at more than 50% off (normally $1900 selling for $800) so we’ll probably go check that out.

@PDieter: that’s a lovely bed, but a 9 year old boy would trash it in short order. :D
