Where in lincoln park is this guy and what time normally? I live very close but I guess the sound doesn’t travel to where I’m at. I would love to hear it and see what’s up. Thanks!

    Maybe?

If it is religious it is protected “speech” under the 1st amendment.

Could just be two guys with rams horns though…

Ken, it does sound like a Shofar but it isn’t being played like one.

Off topic… btw, sorry I didn’t get back to you.

I still have the computer stuff to donate.

I’ll drop it by this week.

This is a curiousity to me. This topic is now a week old… and I do mean “old.” I wouldn’t argue the opinion of the obnoxiousness of the horn being blown. Haven’t heard it. But when I read these posts and see that some posters had the opportunity to make a friendly or at least neutral inquiry about what it is all about and it hasn’t happened.

Ranting here some times makes people feel better but it seems to not often solve the problem. Is that what’s happening? I’m OK with that kind of posts (if it makes you happy); and just curious.

One thing that came to mind, (and I keep meaning to mention), when I first read this thread, was wondering if it was a didgeriedoo.

One day, at the last parking garage I worked at Downtown (so 12 plus years ago now) I was in the building lobby, heading toward the stairway down to the garage.

As I was approaching the stairway door, I heard something strange that sounded like, I don’t know, a lonely, lovestruck moose, in intense physical pain?

Anyhow, I enter the stairwell, and as I’m heading down, there’s this guy on one of the landings blowing into this big, loooooonnnnnggggg tube.

IIRC, there was another curious person there, and we asked the guy what it was, and he said “…a didgeriedoo”.

Odd thing was, it was a metal one, not wood, as I might have imagined. The guy said this was the only place he could practice and not annoy anyone. :-D

Although I don’t think I would have enjoyed listening to it continually, for hours on end, it was kinda cool! If nothing else, didgeriedoo is fun to say! ;-)

That was the only time I recall him playing there, though.

It isn’t a digeridoo. And I can’t leave work to go talk to him.

I knew you couldn’t pigeonmom and perhaps I should have said that in my post. You have been clear about being stuck at work and being subjected to the noise.

I’m sorry if my passive-aggressiveness has offended thee! Eh, no, I’m not. The whole reason I posted here was because I thought there was the outside chance that it *was* some kind of religious thing that I just didn’t understand.

The guy stations himself on the hill above the picnic shelters, if you’re curious. I don’t think a few bleats would be that bad, but it was incessant the time we were there. I’d have the same reaction if someone was playing an extremely loud car stereo too (only then I wouldn’t think maybe it was a religion). We actually haven’t seen him since the last time.

It’s not a didgeridoo; it looks like a big goat horn.

If I happen to be back in the park and he’s there again, I will say something to him. I’m the person who tells people to put their dogs on leashes…I’m not exactly shy. ETA: I will say though that there were two other men with him the time we were there, and I don’t always exactly feel comfortable approaching three large strangers, as earth friendly as they may be.

I’m not sure what it was that I wrote that caused you to think I was offended. I did say twice in my post that I was curious; that was genuine and there is nothing underlying it. I remain intrigued about the purpose of ranting.

BTW, I totally get feeling uncomfortable approaching three strangers and I respect people’s need to do (or not do) what it is to feel safe. Thanks.

The purpose of ranting about this subject or any is to get it off your chest isn’t it? Commiserate with others.

I think there are times on here when people are passive/aggressive and time when people are too anal retentive. This is not one of them. It sounds annoying. I think it’s dumb to pretend there aren’t some courteous norms we all try to adhere to and that doesn’t have anything to do with being intolerant. I want to know why the guy blowing the horn is not even remotely aware of how his behavior is affecting others? It sounds totally annoying and if I heard it, I’d be pissed, too. There are places in the park one could go to “blow their own horn” so to speak, that are more remote and less irritating. If people have talked to the guy and he continues his blowhardedness, HE is the jerk–NOT the poster of this message.

I certainly do not think that the OP is a “jerk.” Does my post seem to indicate that?

I was simply wondering why we still do not know why he’s blowing the hideous thing.

i think it’s possible we still don’t know why he’s blowing his horn because he is not stopping to share that information with others.

He is definately making a statement.. but perhaps not the one he intended.

flowerpetal, “I remain intrigued about the purpose of ranting.”

That quote makes it seem like you are complaining about the people who are bothered by the noise.

I appreciate that pigeonmom. I thought people would take me at my word when I said there was nothing underlying. I also referred to the noise as being “obnoxious” and “hideous.”

And I understand (I think) that people read posts and add their own feelings to what they have read. I have been guilty of that myself. Perhaps I shouldn’t have queried about ranting within this thread; but made the query it’s own thread.

I am here to solve the mystery of the horn blowing. There are a group of young men from Mexico who congregate together to blow what Jewish people refer to as a shofar. It is a ram’s horn. The several men who meet to blow their ram’s horns are Catholic. They are practicing as they blow their horns as part of their church ritual on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings. They are teaching one another how to blow the ram’s horns. Anyone who has ever tried blowing these will tell you they are difficult. As someone in the Jewish community, I was very curious when I heard them blowing one night as they are blowing them in the same way that Jewish people do it during their high holidays. Why? That is a good question. One theory is that they were in families that might have been Jewish and were forced to convert. Another is that there were mixed marriages and that particular group of people melded the shofar blowing into their traditions. In any event, I am sure it can be seen as hideous, obnoxious, etc as it is a disconcerting sound. To some of us, it is familiar though only around September and October. I encourage you to stop and ask the men what they are doing and why they are doing it. You will hear some fascinating stories I am sure.
