LOL…that might get more people to ride the bus if certain people were kept off it!

What was really funny about that article link were the ridiculous advertisements to the left of it… a snoring mask??? That thing was very interesting looking.

I haven’t read the article yet, but on the TV news, they were saying this was based on METRO’s anti-stinky passenger policy.

so, wo gets to decide what is smelly offensive, and what is smelly good? Will there be a job opening?

“Hi, and what do you do for a living?” ” Oh, I smell people” – lol…

Jan, there are actually people that get paid to smell people’s sweaty armpits.

:-(==== (Closest I could come up with to a pukey smiley!)

I *think* it’s for deodorant product testing, or some kind of medical research.

It’s a really sad situation. Sometimes the only baths and hot meals homeless people get are when they’re hospitalized for something serious. Is Seattle effectively reaching this population?

In fact, the Honolulu langauge is based on King County Metro’s Transit Code of Conduct, which classifies “(b)ringing onto transit property odors which unreasonably disturb others or interfere with their use of the transit system, whether such odors arise from one’s person, clothes, articles, accompanying animal or any other source” as a “(m)isdemeanor [which] can result in a citation and fine up to $1,000, and/or arrest and imprisonment in the county jail for not more than ninety (90) days.” (http://metro.kingcounty.gov/tops/bus/ruleride.html).

The language was designed to include all odor sources, including perfume or aftershave, as well as BO. At least some of this code is also included in state law. No idea how often Transit Police are called to enforce it or whether it has been challenged in court. I would guess that in most cases, there are other less subjective reasons, such as non-payment of fare, for suspending the rider from Metro services, vehicles and facilities for a specified period.

Good point, anatid. As the number of homeless has steadily risen over the last 25+ years and services of all types for the lower economic classes have continually been slashed, their increasing proximity in our lives seems to inspire resentment rather than charity and compassion. Not the American ideals I was raised to believe in, we seem to have lost our sense of community and it’s importance.
