My wife and I have had an LG set(their cheapest front loaders) for a little over a year now and really like them. I think that the biggest thing to do in order to keep a moldy smell away is just leaving the washer door open when you’re done running a load through it. At the time of the purchase they were very highly rated by consumer reports and was recommended at Home Depot (which may not mean much).

My only complaint is that the washer can be loud on the not very level, poorly installed floor in our basement.

Like Anonyme, I bought the Axxis stacking W/D by Bosch. It was the only unit that would fit in my second floor closet. I am not happy with the ventless dryer. It is a couple of hours and often comes out damp dry so. Now the washer has a disturbing rattle as if there are nuts and bolts loose somewhere during some (not all) cycles. Finding it really hard to get it serviced and only a year and a half old. I think Hammerhead has a really good handle on washers so next time I replace my main washer and dryer I am taking her with me to the store!

We also like our Fisher & Paykel – we have the washer and dryer. The dryer is unique – a top loading dryer which makes the transfer from washer to dryer very easy. They are very efficient, the clothes are practically dry after the washer, so drying takes little time. They are not very loud, and make some really cool noises not unlike airplane taking off (not in volume, but in tone)

I just found some black Friday specials… Whirlpool Cabrio or Whirlpool Duet sets on sale at Lowes. They seem to do well on consumer reports.

BBGuest, my Axxis is vented, so not sure how much difference that makes. The dryer has a sensor so it stops when the clothes are dry. I’ve never had a drying cycle go longer than 20 minutes. Both units work perfectly after four years. I am a professional gardener and consistently wash some pretty filthy clothing. The Bosch does a great job. I’m wondering if you got a lemon?

A word about Consumer Reports: I was a member for a while, but it seemed to me that the ratings were heavily slanted toward American models and AS style usage. By that I mean large loads in large machines, for people who have laundry rooms and basements – something you would rarely find in Europe.

Consumer Reports certainly tries to re-create American style usage in their testing. That’s who their readers are, so it only makes sense. But if you think they’re biased toward American brands, how do you explain their automobile ratings?

Another word about Consumer Reports…you can access it online, free, from the Seattle Public Library Website using your SPU card. Select ‘Databases’ from the homepage. You don’t have to be in the library to access it, like some other publications. And don’t forget the rebate program going on until 12/31/09 for new washers and dryers that meet energy efficiency standards.

LG Front Load Washer and Dryer.

This is the best buy I have ever made. One year later, no issues or complaints.

My husband can fix anything. He was about to fix the 20yr old avacoado Kenmore Super Duty Washer when I pitched a fit.

We spent 3days reading every report and talking to friends about their machines. I was a little skeptical about the amount of water they use but my clothes are so happy for it. I am also saving alot on my dry cleaning bill.

My machine takes my king size comforter, steam sanitizes with algergin care for my feather pillows and even super sanitizes my husbands hockey gear.

Yes, I ended up with the high gloss red pair, now when friends stop by an the laundry door is open, I dont hide them, I giggle and say I own two red-ferrari’s.

( they were so pretty, it even inspired us to do a laundry room make over, new paint, cabinets and a checker board tile floor , for the laundry garage.)

Also you get a good rebate from City of Seattle for the HE machines.

For Appliances: Do your research for what your family needs, then take your wish for product and price to our local dealer, Wiseman Appliance to see what they can do. They provide good service and it is nice to keep it local. I did for washer and dryer with satisfaction.
