dobroParticipantFirst off,Palin was/is a public figure and VP candidate. Ms.Fluke (I assume you’re referring to the Limbaugh flap) is a citizen asked to testify before a congressional committee. So, yes, apples and oranges. Public figures, by putting themselves in the public arena, have to accept some nasty comments as long as the comments don’t break libel laws. Private citizens responding to congressional requests shouldn’t have to endure being called filthy names in the national media. Is this an attitude you’d call “liberal”?
If I recall correctly, there was a big flap over Letterman’s comments about Palin and he offered a public apology on his show. Heard any apology from Limbaugh yet?
Oh, and Maher. Who pays any attention to that lame a**?
March 3, 2012 at 2:35 am #749602
datamuseParticipantI don’t know about outrage, but I thought it was pretty tacky.
Limbaugh’s always been an ass and a blowhard. And yeah, what he said was tacky, too–not to mention a misrepresentation of Fluke’s testimony.
March 3, 2012 at 2:52 am #749603
datamuseParticipant…oh, and I stopped even considering taking Bill Maher seriously when he started with the anti-vax thing.

SmittyParticipantGood to know dobro – so when can we start calling Hillary a slut? I am sure the MSM would let that go.
Agree on Maher(sp?). What channel is that idiot on anyway?
As to the “outrage” datamuse, you are correct. It is currently limited to MSNBC and their 2% market share – BUT it is sure to spread to the mainstream media within days if not hours. Think HuffPo, etc….followed by CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR, PBS, well…everyone but Fox.
Stay tuned for liberal hypocrisy!
March 3, 2012 at 4:47 am #749606
dobroParticipant“…so when can we start calling Hillary a slut? I am sure the MSM would let that go.”
I guess you didn’t read my entire post. It’s not really that long. There’s a part where I addressed your statement about Letterman calling Palin a slut. And the fact that there was outrage and he publicly apologized. Unlike Limbaugh.
BTW, Hilary has been called lots of names over the years. She doesn’t whine about it tho, like the Wasilla Hillbilly.
March 3, 2012 at 4:58 am #749607
dobroParticipantOh, I googled the Letterman thing. He didn’t actually call her a slut. He read a joke in the Top Ten list about things Sarah Palin did on a trip to New York, one of which was to “buy new makeup to enhance her slutty flight attendant look”.
So, poor taste to be sure, but has nothing to do with the current flap about Limbaugh’s BS. I believe the list of advertisers fleeing the program is up to six.
March 3, 2012 at 5:07 am #749608
SmittyParticipantGood to know. I will write Rush immediately and let him know that he should have said that she had a “slutty flight attendant look” when testifying. I am sure MSDNC would back off.
And, iirc – Hillary was all over the LMSM complaining about the “vast, right wing conspiracy”. And, no – I do not remember the big flap about Letterman’s comments reaching the mainstream media. Maybe the great Dan Rather brought it up?
March 3, 2012 at 5:33 am #749609
dobroParticipantWell, I’ll just bow out then. We’re off into right wing word salad now.
Sometimes I forget that these kinds of subjects aren’t meant to create a dialog that includes thoughtful ideas or facts related to the ostensible subject.
Does this have anything to do with Solyndra?
March 3, 2012 at 5:36 am #749610
NFiorentiniMemberThough I would probably disagree with Smitty in most political arguments, I believe that he brings up a good point.
The feminist argument is discredited when feminist organizations are silent when Letterman or Mayer use misogynist epithets, but then go ballistic on Rush Limbaugh. It looks like a double standard.
Debate ideas and debate philosophies; but using disparaging female-specific curse words makes no intellectual sense, and the political affiliations of the offenders should be irrelevant.
So, instead of Palin being a dumb c__t or some other female politician being a b___h, they should be referred to as the lying sacks of s__t scumbags that they actually are, regardless of their chromosomes being XX or XY.

JanSParticipantlol..NF,,I like you better and better as time goes by.
I have a close friend who used the “C” word all the time. Every time he said it, I called him on it. At least he doesn’t use it around me anymore. It adds nothing to a conversation. And, yes, women should point it out, call them out on it.
Now..I can think of lots of names for Mr. Limbaugh.. :D
March 3, 2012 at 6:24 am #749613
JoBParticipantwhat i find disturbing is how acceptable it has become to vilify women…
as long as it is in a good cause..
political.. or theological.. or ….
i so thought we were leaving the 50s behind us 40+ years ago when i gave birth to my daughter.
i suppose we had some success.
She is a soils engineer who is happiest in hard toe shoes and a hard hat hanging face down in a drill hole…
i am guessing her expertise puts her just beyond the catcalls from the field..
at least until her back is turned.

dhgParticipantI’m with you, Job. It is distressing to hear any television or radio figure use mysoginistic terms. Doesn’t matter the source. Leno referred to Lewinsky as a fat cow ( as if he doesnt have a few pounds to lose). The guy who coined feminazi should have been shunned long ago.

metrognomeParticipantTalking Points
1) What Maher actually said about a year ago on his (subscription required) HBO show, after making a ‘joke’ about Palin, was, “Speaking of dumb tw_ts …”. Faux Noise started using the ‘c word’ in its stories as it is more inflammatory and other Inet sites repeated the error. Rushbo made his comments on his publicly broadcast radio show, which anyone, including children, can listen to.
2) As far as when the outrage will hit Faux Noise, oddly, or maybe not, Greta Von Susteren, who was quite vocal about Maher’s insult, as well as Ed Schultz’ comment about Laura Ingraham (for which MSNBC suspended him for a week) has remained silent about Limbaugh.
3) Rush Limbaugh referring to someone else as a ‘prostitute’ is the height of irony.
4) Rush does not object to public funding for Viagra and other anti-impotence drugs or for mechanical treatment devices, i.e. pumps (neither of which even require a verified diagnosis of ED.) Nor does he refer to men who use such publicly-funded drugs or devices that enable them to have sex as sluts or prostitutes. Nor does he ask them to post videos of themselves having sex.
5) as far as when you can start calling Hillary names, you’re way behind the times …
http://www.elle.com/Life-Love/Society-Career-Power/The-H-Bomb
6) Hillary used the ‘vr-wc’ phrase over 14 years ago; if you can’t remember that Bush was president, why do you still remember this? BTW, she did not invent the phrase.
7) Numerous female comedians use derogatory terms based on male anatomy or sexual ability or orientation to refer to men and no one seems to mind. Oddly, or maybe not, there is no corresponding term to misogyny to refer to women who hate men.

JanSParticipantyeah…it’s man-haters :D
March 3, 2012 at 9:00 am #749617
metrognomeParticipantyeah, but why do women haters get a fancy Greek word?
March 3, 2012 at 9:08 am #749618
metrognomeParticipantooh, ooh, Mr. Kotter, there is a newly coined word, ‘misandry’.
March 3, 2012 at 2:25 pm #749619
SmittyParticipantI will say that Rush really swung and missed on this one. (I haven’t listened to the guy since the 90’s), but for him to equate the amount of money spent on birth control with the number of times that person has sex is ridiculous. Whether it is daily(those were the days!) or yearly you still need to take the same number of pills I would assume.
That said – whether the gubmint should pay for it is the issue – he really looks like a fool (“what’s new, blah, blah, blah”).
March 3, 2012 at 2:40 pm #749620
TDeParticipantThe message I got from this, is that if you are called to DC to state your opinion on an issue and Rush doesn’t happen to agree with your opinion, you will be called names, denigrated and have an investigation into your personal life launched by the media. Even the West Seattle Blog has rules about the kind of name calling and denigration that Rush put out over the public airwaves about this young woman.
This young woman didn’t denigrate males, didn’t make snarky remarks about right wing opinions or religious belief, didn’t imply that others using prescription drugs were less than normal or perverted in some way. Why should she have to endure the hateful public frenzy of those who disagree with her for stating her opinion?
I’m appalled once again and agree that such public rancor should be reigned in… by all sides. I’m ready and eager for more civility in our public dialogue.
March 3, 2012 at 4:07 pm #749621
redblackParticipantlet me just level the playing field here.
anyone who takes viagra is – doing what, exactly?
i’ve been guilty of using the c-word on palin in private conversation, and it was usually preceded with the word “vapid.” i didn’t use the c-word because i hate her because she’s a woman, or because i see her as the lesser of two genders. i used it because she’s a nasty, mean person. her invectives are nasty, her logic is faulty, and she’s a blatant liar. and she knows what she’s doing when she does it.
i could just as easily describe rush limbaugh with the same invective. and i have. in fact, i just as interchangeably use that word for men. probably moreso.
then there’s this question: is it okay for a woman to call another woman a b!tch or a slut? and if so, why? what circumstances would cause one woman to refer to another woman that way?
and i have to say that you’d be hard-pressed to find a liberal commentator who is equally nasty and devoid of compassion as either limbaugh or palin. maybe mike malloy. but his ire is usually directed at corporate citizens.
by the way, regarding libel, slander, and public figures, wikipedia is a good place to start your journey into the world of defamation – though it is certainly not a good place to end it:
Public figure is a legal term applied in the context of defamation actions (libel and slander) as well as invasion of privacy. A public figure (such as a politician, celebrity, or business leader) cannot base a lawsuit on incorrect harmful statements unless there is proof that the writer or publisher acted with actual malice (knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard for the truth[1] ). The burden of proof in defamation actions is higher in the case of a public figure.

JoBParticipanta federal judge recently filed a complaint against himself because a racist email message about President Obama he sent to friends became public.
He did apologize.. but still says only that the email was inappropriate. He isn’t a racist. He sent the email because of it’s political content.
This is the problem i see.
Too many people believe that racist or sexist remarks (not just inapproriate language) are perfectly ok when cloaked in religion or politics … mostly because we are fed a steady diet of those kinds of remarks in the nightly news.
Guess what.
They’re not ok.
the only way those of us who find such remarks not only offensive but harmful have to turn off the public voices is to pressure their sponsors.
Guess what guys.
Women hold the purse strings in this country and it’s way past time that those who make their living off of those buying decisions paid attention to what they are sponsoring.
Three cheers for the power of the purse!

JanSParticipantsmitty…good for pointing that out. One could take birth control for a year and only have sex once in that time period (that may make you less than desirable in some eye, I suppose). Maybe that arm candy that he is married to could educate him on the finer points of the issue, if she knows them. Hopefully she is using birth control..heaven forbid he should recreate :-

JanSParticipantand…money talks…maybe this will get the message to Limbaugh:
