I think it’s rude to use a garbage can other than your own, especially for pooch poo. A few times collecting my can after I get home from work, I’ve found empty Cafe LLadro cups and fast food bags. I think some people are just too lazy to walk their garbage home.

    Necro thread bump…

Dog poo in my can that is no where near the street, up by my garage, for the third day in a row now.

Hmm, leave a sign saying “Please don’t do this” or follow the person and start depositing soiled diapers in their trash can or call involve the police so they can come out and fill out a report?

kg..I certainly wouldn’t involve the police. They really do have much more important things on their minds just now, what with fires and threats against them, and the shooting investigation from last weekend’s incident. But yes, post a sign, post a fake camera and let them know they are being monitored. See if that’s a deterrent first.

I have since calmed down a bit and with some sage advice from JanS, thanks btw, I think I will just leave a note and see what that brings. Normally I could give two figs about this issue, but the trash is really reeking and is getting on the heavy side with all of the deposits.

If I had spare capacity in my garbage and recycling cans I’d be happy to offer it to my neighbors if they asked. But to just help themselves to it is a bit presumptuous and rude. And having someone put unsuitable materials in a recycling bin is just not cool. I mean, really, styrofoam? If my kindergarten-aged niece can figure out which materials go in the correct bins then adults should be able to.

Short of a stakeout to figure out who is doing this, I wonder how hard it would be to drill holes through the top and front edge of your recycling container to add a padlock (which you could remove on pickup day).

    cjb….I like that idea…lock it up !!

Yeah, but then you’re locked out of your own garbage can. I say booby trap it. Splatter ’em with flying garbage (or poo). You’d only have to do it once or twice. Problem solved.

Wow, I had no idea people cared so much about the insides of their garbage cans. I see bagged dog poop in my garbage as the lesser evil compared to exposed poop on my grass or sidewalk. But I don’t often go rooting around in the bottom of my garbage can looking for items the garbage men may have left behind.

I agree that dog owners should take FULL responsibility for their pets, including carrying the refuse home with them, but considering the unbagged deposits on my parking strip and the bagged ones thrown into my bushes, I would ultimately rather they just used my garbage can.

But it WOULD be nice if dog-owners just grew up (not all, just the majority) and took greater responsibility for their pets.

A couple of months ago I started finding doggie poop bags in our garbage can (we don’t have a dog). I pulled out the bags and dropped them right next to the can in the alley. Then I picked up my garbage can and – like others here – moved it out of the alley and up next to our back door. Within a few days, the poop bags had been picked up. And we were able to move the garbage can back out into the alley a couple of weeks later without any more trouble. I like cb’s idea of locking the recycle bin. That’s what I would do. I also would go down to the hardware store and buy some of those red signs that say “KEEP OUT” and tape them to the bins. I really don’t like the idea of anyone going through my stuff either. I have heard stories of artists putting their “bad” paintings in the garbage, only to find out later that neighbors had retrieved them and hung them on their walls! The artists’ own fault IMHO.

This is the opposite of all you complainers ;). You do have a valid point, btw. But it starts getting a little anal retentive.

Once when I was walking my dog and carrying her full poo bag, a neighbor down the street offered me the use of his trash can. He said not only could I use it this time, he said feel free to use it on any walks. It was really extra nice as his house usually came up right after her favorite parking strip. He ALSO had this brilliant idea that dog friendly trash can owners could put stickers on their trash cans to signify that they were poo deposit friendly. I was thinking paw prints would be cute. I live in an apartment now so it is kind of a non-issue for me, but what a great idea!!! Those of us who don’t care could help others out and those of you (the anal retentive ones) could keep your trash free of foreign matter. :)

Rock ON Ellenater! That is a good idea. And I’m glad I’m not the only one who just doesn’t care that much about what goes in my REFUSE bin. :)

Oh nice, someone who doesn’t think the way they do gets called ‘anal retentive’. Don’t you just love the anonymity of the internet. I think my biggest gripe is that my garbage can is very near my front door, whoever is doing this is walking over 20 feet out of their way up my driveway and sidewalk to deposit their lovely gifts. I guess the ‘NO SOLICITING’ signs don’t work on the purveyors of poop.

    Laconique,

If you live in the Junction area feel free to post your address so my secret admirer can change his route to to fill up your bin. That way everyone wins.

Hey kg I was just kidding. Guess it didn’t come off that way. Sorry about that.

I really don’t care though about poo bags but would if people were going through my garbage or adding things other than poo bags.

I wonder if the pawprint thing could work…

also, for the record, I would totally call someone anal retentive to their face.

    :)

    you are kinda anal retentive.

I actually had the “borrowed” garbage can situation at my house. I finally followed up with the neighbors when I ran into them outside. Turns out their kid was taking out the garbage, and they weren’t following up to see if he was doing things correctly.

If your neighbors have kids it could be a situation of “chores 101”. Remember when you were 10? Easy sometimes wins the day.
