I just received a request to do this survey and I thought I’d share. I found some of the questions thought provoking and hard to answer. It was interesting timing, given the news report today that the 14 year old boy who beat the West Seattle bus driver unconcious was drunk at the time.

dawsonctParticipantI guarantee that teens (and pre-teens) have much easier access to completely unregulated black-market marijuana than highly regulated and controlled alcohol. They probably get their alcohol at home when they do, though. Admittedly, much like when I was their age, a loooong time ago (not that long!).
That will be the case until marijuana is legalized.

And kids exploring “adult” behavior will ALWAYS be the case.
Remember?

DBurnsParticipantI find surveys like this difficult to answer. What is a “typical West Seattle Family”??? I thought it was a bit too vague. It bugged me, but I answered based on my opinions but had to skip a lot of the questions as I just couldn’t wrap my head around what “typical” looks like. Our school wanted us to do it so I hope the info will help something.

markopoloMemberagree. typical is a tough thing to define. I think they were trying to figure out “average.” Or, what do you notice, if anything, about other families, etc. kind of the like trying to figure out what is the mindset locally about these things. it’s hard, but I think worthy. my daughter is away at school. let me tell you, there are big problems with drinking in all older teens no matter where they live or go to school. it is a clear reflection of adult behavior and rampant consumerism. party up! that’s how they sell stuff. fit in! that’s how they sell stuff. problem is that attitude is not sustainable as they say. short term thinking. good for corporate profits, not so good for people.

JoBParticipanti think too many parents just don’t think about this stuff early enough.
they realize this might be an issue when they discover their child has a problem…
we don’t think enough about the example we set for our children… or remember how good we were at taking advantage of opportunities..
