Just curious if anyone has used any online solutions for backing up personal files? We are considering going with Carbonite but don’t have a lot of knowledge about other options, if there are any better options or ones to avoid. Any assistance is appreciated.

Carbonite is good as long as you don’t have a bunch of pictures. If you do you it will take a long time to do the backup.

Depends on what you want to use it for – Carbonite doesn’t archive anything, only mirrors what’s currently on your hard drive.

I’ve been using JungleDisk for a while, but there are more options out there now and I haven’t checked into any of them.

    ericak:

Why the cloud as opposed to other solutions? I hooked my close family up with a wireless HD that syncs to a hard drive in another room — one can imagine storing said drive in the attic.

Just wondering since I distrust the cloud for secure documents.

Local (i.e., in your attic) works, as long as your house doesn’t burn down. Offsite “cloud” storage is more secure, plus most cloud backup solutions encrypt your data before it is backed up. I actually use triple-redundant backup… a wired HD, a wireless (in the house but remote from the computer) HD and CrashPlan for remote backup. Another option would be two wired HDs, one of which stored at a safe deposit box, swap every week or so.

I use CrashPlan. I have roughly 750gb of photos (using LightRoom) and it took a few weeks to to the initial sync, but as I import new photos in the sync takes a fraction of the time.

The client allows you to not sync specific items, i.e. downloads directory.

JayDee – We also have an external hard drive and back up weekly, but as twobottles suggested we want to do an additional backup that is offsite in case of a break-in, disaster, etc. The most important reason is to keep safe all of our family photos. We do everything digital these days and rarely print . . .

Before the widespread and cheap advent of wireless drives, I decided to have a RAID mirror array, but as has been mentioned, not much good if someone steals it or a housefire. My Wifi-network likely reaches the detached garage, and it is unlikely that both house and garage would burn or be burgled at the same time…Hmmm. My own garage cloud…
