anyone know of a local (preferably west seattle) way to get rid of block styrofoam packaging? after doing some reducing and clean-up, i have a small pile of blocks that were used to package full-sized (not flat) televisions.

Not West Seattle but the only place I know of is IKEA in Tukwila. The bins are inside the building near the Customer service doors. I think you could probably park in the ‘loading’ area to drop it off.

Thanks for this thread. I got an unassembled piece of furniture recently and have no less than six big garbage bags full of styrofoam I broke down. I hate to think of sending them to a landfill! I Googled this Ikea service and it looks like it’s just the Seattle (Renton) store that offers styrofoam recycling. They’re partnering with this company nearby: http://www.styrorecycle.com/ So if you have bigger needs you may want to consider them.

I’ll be making a trip to Renton soon!

i also thought about cutting it into 1″ slabs and putting it behind the sheet rock in my basement for insulation value. or maybe nooks and crannies in the attic.

    seriously.

Note: I have made glue from Styrofoam and orange oil and it is crazy sticky and I have no problem believing it is “permanent”. Benzene is released so don’t try this indoors or around open flames.

You could also try the UPS store in Jefferson Square. I know you can take the stryofoam packing material there for reuse. So I am wondering if they could use some bigger pieces also.

    redblack..

    in this case..

that was intended as a gender neutral term:)

when my body worked better i was a fearless queen of innovative recycling… i did cut the stuff up to re-use.. making my own wall socket insulators long before they were commercially available… and stockpiling Styrofoam for use in planters and in the crawl space…

but i am older now and my body doesn’t cooperate quite so well :(

hats off to you for being willing to invest the time and effort.
