    Hi All,

My friend’s dog slipped out of my house the other night for about 2 minutes and it was then when I became highly aware of how badly people speed down Beach Drive. It enrages me b/c there are so many people who walk, run and bike along this street who become endangered b/c of these selfish drivers. Instead of ranting about it, I’d like to do something about it and see about getting more police patrol on this street. Does anyone know how I can request this?

I’ll support anything to get the speed down. I will drive the speed limit and will often have drivers pass me, illegally, to speed down the street.

    Patty,

It took me almost being killed for the city to install the speed cushions on beach drive. They do not move very fast. The best thing to do is to get the neighborhood together and get the local councilperson involved. That’s the best place to start, good luck. Tom

People have been driving more aggressively and disrespectfully lately, and I sure hope no one gets hurt because someone was being careless.

While I do drive the speed limit down Beach Drive, I think the repaving that was done encourages speeding. The crappy part to the south is so uneven a driver at the speed limit has to drive slow to miss the chuckholes and incipient landslides.

Even driving the speed limit on the nice wide part, I have been passed by impatient people, usually in SUVs and larger German autos. I often set my cruise control to the speed limit just to keep them from goading me.

The speed cushions near Jacobsen may as well have been painted on the road for all the good they do. If you line your car up just right, your latte is hardly disturbed going over them. If the city put in Bellevue-style speed humps you could sell the excess car parts scattered by the speeders to defray the costs. The speed cushions only slow the timid not the bold, and have much in common with Sharrows–feel good measures that solve nothing.

The speed limit is 30 mph on Beach Drive. I see alot of individuals who go 15-20 mph on Beach Drive to enjoy the “scenery” imo this is just as obnoxious b/c some of us actually are using the road b/c we need too.

I will sometimes go slower then the speed limit to enjoy the scenery but as soon as someone is coming up behind me I speed up until I can pull over to allow the traffic to go by me so I can enjoy the scenery.

This subject could also read “Speeding in West Seattle” as this is a regular occurrence, even off of Beach Drive.

The worst instances of unsafe driving occur when the Vashonites are vying for position in the ferry line by Lincoln Park, where they routinely pass on either side to get 1-2 car lengths ahead of you, like the ferry is boarding and they won’t make it back to the Skipper and Mary Ann.

Contact the Southwest Precint of the Police Dept and they will give you the contact person for patrols.

I am one of those sightseeing drivers on Beach drive who was nearly totalled trying to pull over to the side so that the large SUV that roared up behind me could pass…

she passed me all right.. on the right.

impatience doesn’t justify that kind of behavior…

i may have been 10 miles under the speed limit but i am pretty sure she was driving more than that over the speed limit…

is another person’s life worth getting to your destination a couple of minutes early?

Probably not, if you choose to see it like that.

When you choose to live in a scenic area…

you have to expect people to look at the scenery…

It is illegal to drive below the speed limit. By driving below the speed limit one is endangering lives.

So I have to ask what right do you think you have to endanger someones life like that? And who do you think you are thinking you have a “right” to make someone late for their appointments? Some people, like myself, take commitments as well as appoiintments very seriously.

If you want to enjoy the view park your car and walk to the park. it is that simple.

What is with everyone here speculating about laws on here and proclaiming it as gospel?

before you start spouting off with armchair lawyering LOOK IT UP
    http://search.leg.wa.gov/pub/textsearch/default.asp#RCW

searching for “driving slow” yields RCW 46.61.425
Minimum speed regulation – “(1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law: “

Care to explain how impeding the normal and reasonable speed of traffic applies to a neighborhood? Since we are all just using opinion and our imagination as proof positive that speeding is illegal on beach drive, Can anyone bring up an example, of someone getting a ticket in a neighborhood with a speed limit of 30mph or slower, for driving too slow. feel free to use an example in a movie, or make one up.

vincent – how are people using their imagination or opinion when sunshine posted a link to the actual law?

Is the question now, does that law NOT apply on a neighborhood roadway?

Your just being difficult, in an attempt to be right. If I attempt to follow your logic, anyone doing 25mph on beach drive should get a ticket. Clearly this isn’t a community standard or half the threads on this fourm that complain about speeding would be about being people who drive too slow. The too slow laws typically applies to highways like HWY2 where impeding of traffic can cause issues with commerce or people reaching their homes. Its also illegal in the state to impede more than 5 cars, but again that doesn’t make much sense if your driving down california ave to get to thriftyway.
The statement was made that it was illegal to go too slow, and while there are cases where that is true, the application for a 30mph road like beach drive is silly at best. But I tell you what, if I get a ticket for doing 20 on beach drive, I will make sure I get the state supreme court to clarify if they meant to include beach drive when they added the provision. Because clearly normal and reasonable is totally subjective when your counting mph under 30, like your inferring.

I’m not interested in “being right”, actually.

I only just now (since sunshine posted it) realized that it actually was a law.

I do know, however, how dangerous it can be to come up behind a vehicle traveling too slow (I don’t speed, but this has happened to me numerous times).

I’m just curious why it is not stated in the actual law that neighborhood roadways are exempt. You are accusing others of making up laws, yet, you seem to be making up the interpretation. Unless it is stated somewhere??

I think the statement of how a law is applied can only be reflected in how its enforced. Like the 100s of thousands of random laws on the books for perpetuity.
so I ask again, who do you know who got a ticket for not going fast enough in a 30mph zone.

We should probably just ban driving too…that way everyone will be safe and be happy.

No more bans. What we need are scenic alternatives to such petty nit-pickery.

I’m for an aerial tram system over West Seattle. Use prison inmates as labor; gives them a chance to get outdoors and wears them down, diminishing the likelihood of violence against themselves or others in the facility.

It’s really hard to obstruct traffic when you pull over for cars coming up behind you..

obstructing means you are in the way…

you are right JoB, if you are pulled over then you are not obstructing traffic, unless you pull over in the middle of the road, then it is more like stopping. But in your incident where you were passed on the right, you did not mention that you were pulled over, but if you were indeed pulled over then how did they pass you on the right, or did they go up on the sidewalk?
