rykriteMemberI have a couple of items that need fixing – a DVD player and a crockpot/slow cooker (I melted the cord and exposed bare wire – oops). I called Scott Wiseman, recommended from another post, but he only does large appliance repair. I searched online and found a company that had the worst reviews I’ve ever seen, and I found a local place (Roop) who doesn’t appear to be in business. Anybody?
PS One good thing about this stinky economy (and my own personal finances): I’m willing to take the time to find a place to fix things instead of throwing them away and buying new. See, I CAN be taught.

livingonthebeachMemberTry South Seattle Community College. They typically have electronic classes and may love the challenge.

AlcinaParticipantAthough it isn’t in West Seattle, you might want to try Ajax Electric, 2911 1st Ave.,
206-622-9945 (SODO area). Several years ago they fixed two small kitchen appiances for me and I was happy with the service and price. I don’t know if they repair DVDs or not.

rykriteMemberI am sad to report that it was more cost effective to buy a new crock pot than to fix the old one. Ajax was VERY nice on the phone (thanks for the referral) but it was probably $6 for a new cord and a minimum of $14 for labor. I was at Macy’s, and they had a sale on a much nicer crock pot that came with a mini-crockpot (suitable for dips etc.) for $27.
I am ashamed to say that my old crockpot is in a landfill. I saved the crockery insert to use as a planter, at least.
This is the planned obselesence that they talk about, isn’t it? I find it so sad that it was better for me to get a whole new one, oodles of packaging and all. I’m not entirely comfortable with this decision, but I’m not going to beat myself up over it, either.
(Sigh.)

SueParticipantThis happened to me when my blender container cracked. To buy a new container cost the same as buying an entirely new blender, moreso when you added in the shipping cost since nobody had the part locally. I find it very frustrating – we’ve become such a disposable society.
